Gamer Girls - What do you play?

I noticed a few of us are actually PC gamers.

Yay us!

I wanted to know what you're currently playing, what types of games you like best and anything else you wanted to throw out there!

I'll start!

My husband and I just canceled our World of Warcraft accounts and started playing Trion World's Rift. We don't get to play as frequently as we used to play, but try to get in a few hours of leveling during the weekends.

I used to play mostly caster classes (back in the days of EverQuest) As we moved into the more recent games (EQ2, World of Warcraft, Rift) i've assumed the tank role, and he usually plays a healer or magic user (you just can't pull the wizard out of him sometimes!)

I've played some of the single player games, such as dragon age, but I tend to get bored without the social interaction provided in massively multiplayer online games.

I totally stink at first person shooters... the maps always seem to blend together to me. I think the difference with fantasy games is i remember there was a tree right there... where first person shooters.. it's the same box on every corner!

And I confess, while i don't use my gaming consoles often... i LOVE playing rock band (any version). I rarely get to play my guitar anymore so playing the guitar like controller with a premade band is much fun, especially playing today's hits. I really wish they'd put some Dave Matthews band in there tho!

Re: Gamer Girls - What do you play?

  • My husband and I both still play Everquest, we didn't like EQ2 and I tried WoW for a bit and didn't like that either. I played Lord of the Rings for a few months but I missed my friends on EQ. So that's pretty much what I stick with, my husband plays Dragon age at times and a few other games too but we pretty much still play EQ the most.

  • Woo hoo, gamer girls!

DH and I are Guild Wars fanatics.  We have been playing since it came out in 2005, and have three accounts between us.  We are generalists so we play each character type, though my first character was a Ranger and his a Necromancer.  Right now I am working on getting my Mesmer to Legendary Survivor (has to reach 1,337,500 or LEET=1337 experience before dying).  And we are anxiously awaiting the release of Guild Wars 2 (though not holding our breath, as it's been "about to release" since 2009).

I like medieval-fantasy role playing games best, so I've played Diablo III, Morrowind, and Stronghold as well (and tried some other ones that didn't grow on me, like Arx Fatalis).  Because my laptop's video card is lame, I am confined to playing Castle Attack 2 these days... though some days when I'm feeling okay I might try playing on my desktop for an hour -- tops.

Oh, I once tried Madden 200x (can't remember what year) but was ridiculously uncoordinated with the console adapter, so it's safer for me to remain an armchair quarterback.

  • On the PC I play The Sims 3 and a lot of the hidden object and time management games from Big Fish.  On the console I play Assassin's Creed and I'm patiently waiting for the new Uncharted.  I play Tiger Woods Golf with the DH but that's the only sports game outside of Wii games I'll play.  My latest must play is Dance Central :-)
  • Lessee... My favorites are tower defense, turn-based strategy, and wacky puzzle-action games, but I certainly did my WoW stint.

I played WoW from beta to just before Cataclysm, though "played" may not be the right term near the end.  I started as a gnome tank in the beta, kept tanking through vanilla, then spread out and tried all the other classes for kicks.  Eventually I settled on an RP server, where my my gnome warlock, Perspicacity, ran "Stormwind College."  Every Sunday evening in Stormwind Park she'd host a public symposium on various topics pertinent to Azeroth, like "Sentience, responsibility and the modern murloc" and the like.  Yeah, I am a huge nerd.  For what it's worth, attendance was pretty good, and I did it for a couple of years.

I decided to pass on Rift and GW2, really I don't have the time.  I played in an all-dwarf guild on Warhammer for a bit, and dabbled in LOTR as well.

Lately I play Civ 5 when I can, a host of little indie games when I can squeeze one in, and De Blob 2 and Stacking on the PS3.  I don't actually care for multiplayer gaming, it winds me up instead of calming me down.

First off Amy, that's way cool that you are/were a game developer... no wonder you know so much about games!  I would totally have "attended" Stormwind College... sounds cool (yup, another nerd here)!

And while I am addicted to an MMORPG, I actually find that I'm quite shy on it.  I prefer to adventure alone, with my heros and henchmen, and don't interact much with folks other than the handful I've gotten to know in our very small guild over the years.  I get wound up too and stressed when I have to trade other players and whatnot, so I just don't bother.  I do find it entertaining sometimes to read the silly chatter in towns though.  Some can be pretty funny, other times, it's wholly juvenile and stupid.

Ha!  yes, exactly.  I almost never enjoyed playing with people I didn't know, though interacting in the symposium setting was different somehow, and totally enjoyable.  No WAY would I get on vent, either, I really didn't want anyone to start with gender politics, I havea ridiculous giggle and a "young" voice.  Folks (and my husband, who doesn't play MMORPGS) would laugh at me for playing an extremely multiplayer game solo.

My husband's main character on Guild Wars is female, and for years he stayed "in the closet" about being a "he" IRL (I went along with it as best I could, talking about his character without using pronouns and whatnot).  DH found it amusing that folks would always assume he was female based on his character (and there was even this one guy online I remember who was way too flirty with our female characters and it came out that he didn't think anyone would ever play a character opposite their IRL gender... he was especially fun to mess with). So, needless to say, MH avoided vent for a long time... he's got a very deep voice, lol.  On the other hand, I was surprised at how often other gamers thought I was male ("there are no girls on the internets"), and I usually wanted them to know that they were wrong.  Girl Power!

This is kinda funny... I always play females and everyone always assumes I'm a male until they meet my husband. He always plays male characters.

I have been guild leader in many of our guilds.. and usually main tank, so many of the guys have an odd respect for me. Typically somewhere between "she's so cool" and "yes mom" depending on their age LOL

I prefer text chat myself, but really more because headphones give me a headache and I prefer to listen to music while I play rather than the continual babblings of the young males of the next generation heehee

At one point I ran the 3rd ranked guild on our WoW server right after Lich King came out. It was rough and I had A LOT more time on my hands than I do now. If we get 10 hours of game play in a week that's a miracle anymore. But, so far Rift is pretty low key and it has a lot of the old Everquest elements that I loved so much (they have bards!!! with instruments!!)

I guess because I work from home all day and I don't get a lot of non work related interaction with people, i really enjoy making friends in games, so the social aspect of MMO's is a big deal for me.

It's not that single player games aren't fun... I think it's more that I get tired of sitting at the same desk after a full day at work, and being in my office for a 10 hour work day is annoying enough, trying to relax in the same room with a game by myself just doesn't cut it. At that point, I just go read a book in our library or in the bed.

My husband and I plan on trying both the new star wars MMO and Guild Wars 2. I wasn't big on Guild wars because it was so bloody difficult to meet anyone and party with people.. but supposedly Guild wars 2 is going to fix that, so we'll see!

I'd actually gone back to the original everquest a couple of times, but it was hard to find other players to play with, especially when you've been so far out of it for so long you don't know what you're doing anymore LOL

Heh, if you do end up playing GW2, look me up (PM me here or something and we can swap character names, lol)!  Even if we're not in the same guild it would be cool to go beat up some monsters with you!  At least I hope I will be able to squeeze in some play time after baby comes... my time in GW has dwindled so much since being pregnant and I hate it... especially now since it's bed rest driven... like being a chocolate addict and finally getting to go to your favorite chocolate store and finding out the day before that you're horribly allergic!

  • Another medieval type gamer here. Not least because I started with tabletop D&D, most heavily in undergrad.

In the early to mid 90s, I did the PC-based ones like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Arcanum. I skipped Morrowind because I could never get the hang of the first-person perspective. And I couldn't do FPS's at all. I would watch over friends' shoulders to keep them company but I don't have the reflexes (I was so used to turn-based) and some of those jumping out at you elements would even give me nightmares.

I went several years without a computer so I missed the whole EQ thing, although many friends were sucked in. By the time I could get involved again, WOW was well-established but sounded too hardcore for me, especially as a beginner. (My brother has been playing since probably day one but he's in another time zone.)

I signed up for Lord of the Rings Online with two friends (one of which is now DH) and we did that pretty heavily for almost two years. The grouping aspect was kind of stressful, though, and we had trouble coordinating our schedules. The game really requires large groups for some things, enforcing the whole "well the original fellowship had six members" thing. We would find guilds that were mostly older members like us but they tended to be small and have real-life time conflicts just like us so it was rare to be able to actually get through a quest.

We now also have an XBox and a Wii but I cannot get the hang of a controller. I really enjoy the drums on Rock Band, however. And that is a work out! DH has a heavy console background, especially the NES. Lots of Mario and Metroid.

We sunk a couple months into Civ V when it came out late last year. DH had played all the prior versions but it was my first experience with it. Fortunately our work schedules are practically opposite each other so there wasn't much fighting over whose turn it was.

Once I know I have time again, and this pregnancy-induced eye strain clears up, I may look into Dragon Age. Friends who know my playing style say that's probably my safest bet. Although sometimes I think I'd like to try another MMORPG. I'd just have to give up on participating with DH because of his schedule.

Our kid could arguably be a third generation gamer. My folks were the first in their circle to buy Pong and I remember the crowds gathering in our living room every evening. And my mother spent umpteen hours at work actually doing those text-based adventure games in the pre-Windows days, where your monitor was black with either green or amber text.

LOL The running joke in our gaming circle... "what's your daughter going to play? tank, healer or dps?!!"

  • kristennd, I can totally relate re: third generation too!  My dad and I used to play Frogger and Tetris together (and we would compare notes on Free Cell), and I did those text adventure games too on my Commodore 64 (take me back, now)!

It all started for me with Pole Position and Pitfall on Atari, then morphed into Ms. Pac Man (I so wanted one of those table top arcade games), and Q-bert and other arcade games... then I met DH and he brought me into the 21st first century of gaming.  He was big into Kron-X and may have done EQ too, that or Final Fantasy, for a while as well before I met him.  Oh, and I dabbled in Sanctum too, and offline, DH and I would sometimes play Magic The Gathering.

But I love board games too... Monopoly, Sorry, Life. Backgammon... Chess was always too draining for me though. However, I digress...

  • My brother made a ton of money off Magic. He went into the Navy right out of high school (1992) and was stationed in Japan. Magic was obviously a very popular thing to play on the ships because the cards don't take up much space, but you couldn't buy them over there. So the one time he came to visit us in Portland, we drove him to every gaming store in town, he pretty much cleared them all out, and then resold them back on the ship at a ridiculous mark up.

  • I play wow and was pretty hard core into PVE for awhile. Have always played a healer class and in WOTLK was in one of the top five raiding guilds on our server.

Have been backing way off on my playtime and am in a family friendly casual guild now where I raid one time a week.. max two. Planning on still playing occasionally when the baby comes but we will see. :)
