Babies: 9 - 12 Months

11 months old and no "real" words

Good Morning everyone -

Harrison is just over 11 months old and has really no "real" words yet. He says Mama and Dada, but that's about it. It's not for lack of practice either. We are forever saying what things are and repeating ourselves so that he associates certain things with the words that we say.

Preston had at least 5 words by now. Yet Harrison is crawling/cruising (and Preston didn't do that until 13 months or so). It's amazing how different kids are, even siblings.

Re: 11 months old and no "real" words

  • My nephews are 18 months and they don't really say any real words except for Mama, Dada and Hi. The Dr. isn't concerned so I don't think you have to worry about it. I can also say that I know some little boys who weren't saying words t'ill after they were 1.

  • I think some kids just aren't as verbal right away.  My neice and nephew are that way.  My nephew is 16 months and JUST said "ball" as his first real word.  He babbles "mamamma" and "dadadada", but doesn't always use them in context.  My neice didn't talk until she was 2 years old and now you can't get her to stop!

I'm sure Harrison is just focused on physical milestones right now rather than verbal.

  • Max doesn't say anything but "mama" "dada" and "ba" (which he associates with his bottle, but sometimes he just babbles it contently, so I'm not sure.)

  • Reese doesn't talk either, except for babbling dadada. That's it.
  • I think that's normal. I believe 18 months is the time when "average" babies start to talk?

Evie is one and doesn't say anything but dada.

  • DD was way over 1 before we heard any words including mama and dada.  I think he's still well within average.
  • I'm glad I'm not alone on this, Sam is not quite 11m and he'll say mama/dada but he doesn't refer to us as mama/dada, if he's saying mama it's usually part of his whining "mamamamamamamaaaa" and dada is just random babbling despite the fact taht we are always pointing to ourselves and referring to us as mama/dada and we point to a million other things and name them as well.  He's pointing now too so we tell him what he's pointing at.

Sam did reach all physical milestones early than average I think, he took his first steps before 9m and is now running, he crawled at 6.5 months etc.  So I figure thats more of his focus than learning words.

This is Owen exactly! We read to him many books every day. We always talk to him and tell him names of everything. The words will come when they are ready.
