SA Results - help please

Hi Ladies, I usually post on TTTC (this is a cross post). Hoping you guys might be able to shed some light...

We got DH's SA results in today. The nurse said everything was normal, but I have a few questions. Here are the numbers:

Count: 83.5 Million (normal is above 20 million)

Motility: 77% (normal is above 50%)

Morph: 5.5% (Kruger's morphology scale - anything less than 4% is bad. Above 14% is excellent and 4-14% is "sub-optimal"?!)

Volume: 1.8mL (normal is greater than 2)

As you can see, the volume was slightly low, but the nurse said this is not a cause for concern, especially since it is so close to borderline. I do recall DH saying that "not a lot came out" (sorry for TMI) because he clearly was not turned on at the idea of giving a sample in a doc office.

So, while the nurse said all is normal...I feel like I'm not sure. The volume is a little low and the morph is normal but at the low end. Am I concerned for no reason? Help please!

  • Those numbers look great truthfully :) I wouldn't worry about the volume at all and the morph is just fine. If my husband had those numbers we would be doing still be doing clomid (because I have faulty ovulation) but doing it with timed intercourse or an IUI.

  • I think the numbers sound fantastic!  Morphology is kind of a moving target...my RE firmly believes anything about 4% is just fine, and the low volume is totally normal given the situation.

  • Numbers are great! No worries. And morph is fine. Some docs don't think morph plays much of a role anyway and put little thought into it. But your's is normal anyway so not an issue. And I see no cause for concern with the volume when it still produced 80 million sperm.

History of IF and 2.5 years TTC. The day we were to start our first IUI we received a call that changed our lives forever and 10 month old Olivia joined our family. Shortly thereafter we got a surprise BFP and baby 2 is due July 5, 2012

  • I agree the numbers look fine. I think that the volume is on the lower side for most DH's when they have to give these samples and does not reflect the actual volume. My DH said the same thing that yours did after all was said and done. Anyways if the Dr. has any questions/doubts they will just do a second SA.
  • My RE doesn't care at all about morphology, and since YH's is above the minimum, I really wouldn't worry too much about it.  As far as volume, MH had 1.0 ml, and my RE also said that likely was due to "anxiety" in collecting the sample.  Plus, considering how high the count was, a slightly lower volume is not a big deal.  Really, your numbers look good.  Ours are significantly lower than yours and we're still strong IUI candidates.
