I just got back from my weekly check-up, and I'm a little disappointed in my progress. You can see from my ticker that I don't have much time left, and my dr. said I was "almost dilated to 1 cm." She didn't say anything about effacement. I'm starting to worry that I may not get my VBAC if things don't progress soon. She's okay with letting me go past my EDD up to 41 weeks, but at that point it will be spring break here and if there's only 1 of the 3 doctors from that practice in town, then I'm out of luck because that doctor would have to cover all 3 hospitals in the area and wouldn't be able to stay with me. She also told me I needed to be dilated to at least 2 cm for a chance at a successful induction. She won't use a foley balloon either - just break my water and give me pitocin. I'm carrying this LO as high as I carried DD#1 (who hadn't ever dropped when I had my c/s 4 days before EDD). I'm hoping and praying for better things by next week.

Everyone is different (which I'm sure you know!) but hopefully my experience will help you feel better:
I did not get checked at 38 weeks, but at 39 weeks I was also barely 1cm, with baby up high. When I asked the midwife who was on call over the holiday weekend, she told me but added "But we'll at your next appointment." This was on a Tuesday.
That Thursday I was getting some mild back pain. That Friday I was having contractions on and off, lost my mucous plug in the evening. I got really excited cause I thought this was definitely it, and DH, DS1 and I all went into the hospital to be checked. I can't remember for sure, but I was either still at 1 or just at 1.5! Depressing!
Slept through the night and in the morning I went back in because my contractions were much worse - so this is hours later, around 9am, and I was just at 2! And the baby was still high and everything.
I had him that evening, after taking hours and hours to get to 5cm and then completing in just the next 2.
Try to relax as best you can, and maybe consider not getting any more checks if you're the type who will just get really stressed out? GL!
eta: Oh and also, DS2 didn't drop until well into labor. At 5cm he was still up high, and at some point between when they broke my water and 2 hours later when I started pushing he descended to 0 station.
You're doing just fine! I was maybe 1 cm at 38 weeks and still went into labor on my own at 40 w 3 days. Honestly, I ended up only having cervical checks every other appointment because I got so disheartened at the first (where I wasn't even 1 cm). This LO was just as high as his brother as well, which made me so nervous, but I had a wonderful VBAC!!
If you're really having emotional issues about everything, I found the relaxation and 'come out baby' tracks at hypnobabies very helpful - got me past all my negative emotions (I was staring down an induction as well - was supposed to be induced the day he was born). I honestly think they helped me relax, let go and gain hope and maybe that helped me to go into labor. The relaxation one is free.
Good luck - you have plenty of time yet - 1 cm is just fine!!
