Teething, what do you give LO?

Hey ladies, LO has been teething since he was 4 mos. old and it seems that tooth #3, #4 and maybe #5 is on it's way Smile

I only give him something if it's totally necessary but now I'm questioning what we have.  I bought the Hyland's Gel (which wasn't part of the recall but it seems to contain Parabens Indifferent) and Camilia (which contains Belladonna, the same ingredient that the Hylands tablets have in them, thus the recall).  We give him tylenol if he's really uncomfortable.  So far he's been dealing with teething pretty good but he has some painful/irritable moments, too.

I thought "natural" and "homeopathic" were safer than the alternatives but now I'm not so sure. Tongue Tied

  • we haven't given LO anything yet, but she also doesn't have any teeth yet so while she is teething, I don't think it is at its worst yet.  I do try to give her something to teethe on at all times (though she often finds something herself, I try to offer Sophie or a washcloth).  I have heard wetting the washcloth & freezing it is really soothing to them too - i haven't tried freezing it yet.  Or I will massage her gums with my finger & that seems to really make her happy.  As the DCP said, "she gives you that 'oh thank you jesus' face".  Stick out tongue

Haha! I know the face :). We have a ton of teethers and he loves one in particular that looks like a banana. I should try the frozen wash cloth again though.

  • Yeah, so far, we haven't given LO anything (#2 is coming in atm) but he doesn't seem uncomfortable at all and he's happy just chewing on his toys. But he may have it "easier" than most babies?...because the night before his first one, he STTN without a problem. I had no idea he was cutting a tooth until we were nursing and OUCH! =P

  • oh & out of curiousity...anyone use those amber teething necklaces?  I have seen them on babysteals a few times & I was just at my local all-natural baby store that had them.  The girl working there said she uses one on her son & swears by it.  It makes me nervous, but she said the beads are indivdually sewn in so there is no worry about a bead breaking loose and baby getting it. They are not supposed to sleep with them.  I don't know...curious about your thoughts? experiences?

  • Yep, friends of ours said their LO went through the whole teething phase and wasn't bothered one bit.  J has moments where he isn't his normal, happy self and I know it's due to teething.  It's great that B isn't affected by it!

We have an amber teething necklace and I'd like to think it helps a little?  We wrap it around his ankle (twice) at night when he sleeps (thanks Robbi for the tip).

this is genius!  I wouldn't have thought of the ankle, safely tucked into the pjs!

That IS genius!  I had wanted to get an amber necklace for him, but was nervous about it around his neck, even when we're together.  This makes a lot of sense!

I an wary of many so-called homeopathic remedies that are out there (like teething tablets and such).  While I am sure there are many that can do a lot of good, I feel that whole market isn't very well-regulated, and that just because an ingredient is "all-natural," it doesn't mean it is safe.  I do give Henry a little Tylenol when he is really having a hard time with teething.  I was wary of that at first, too, but it does seem to help a ton!  I don't like to give it to him too often, but once in a while it's fine, I think.

we use one and he doesn't ever play with it.  When he's napping and sleeping I double it up as an anklet and he can't get to it and I don't have to worry.

J has a pretty easy time with teeth I think. I rarely give him anything for teething except a frozen washcloth and teething toys.  I did use teething tablets prior to the recall, but so infrequently I had 90% of the bottle left.

as for OP's question - I think belladona is different than chamomilla... don't have time to look into right now.  But I have given J chamomilla before.  In a real homoepathic (very diluted) dose.  It's commonly used for discomfort and irritability, but as with all homeopathic "cures" the person, even a LO must have certain presentation/character/mood for a specific treatment to be relevant and work.

  • Once they are 6 months, you can alternate the tylenol with advil and that seems to help some when he's really bad.  He usually finds something to chew on though - but he especially likes a lot of his bath toys.  Books are a favorite item to chew on too.
  • We use teethers (Sophie is the favorite, along with wooden blocks, but they'll chew on anything within reach lol) and Bonjela, which I'm not sure if it's available in the USA? I've tried different teething gels and it's the only one that seems to work on my dudes. If they get REALLY bad we use a little Tylenol, but I think we've only had to do that maybe three times?

What's funny with B is that he used to love Sophie when he *wasn't* teething (like around 3-6mo old) and now that he IS teething, he could care less about her. Most of the time he wants nothing to do with her, but if he decides to play with her a bit, he gets tired of her after 1 minute and throws her away. Go figure!

THIS is what I was going to say... When it was really bad in December (Alexa got all 4 molars and 2 canines in one month) we alternated between Infant Tylonol and Infant Ibuprofin. That totally helped. We could tell when it was time for more medicine because she was upset.

We have also tried Baby Orajel and the Teething Tablets. Not sure if either helped much. Have not tried the amber necklace thing.

Another idea... Alexa LOVES sucking on ice cubes. Kinda odd. We also give her frozen fruit. We have a bunch of cold/frozen teethers that have been sorta helpful.

  • she was teething from about 3-4 months but didn't get her first tooth until she was about 10 months old!!! but it was never really that bad. she'll sometimes have an off night but we just give her some motrin (since it lasts longer) and we rarely have to give a second dose.

aside from everything already mentioned in this thread we also did some "momsicles" made with frozen BM - while messy, she definitely enjoyed it :)

Vanessa - if you go to the BS FB page when they have the amber teething necklaces on, you'll see that there are tons of mamas who swear by them and say they make a difference. plus some use them for pain or for migraines for themselves and thus know for a fact that they do help!

us too except she has recently taken to chewing on Sophie again - I assume b/c she is teething! so B may fall in love w/sophie again in the future :)

  • Libby is an awful teether and has been at it since she was 3 months old. She has 8 teeth now and her 1-year-old molars have been taking FOREVER to come in...they're right beneath the gums but have yet to cut through!

Like the others, she was all about Sophie for a good 6 months and then preferred to chew on harder things like books or even a metal teaspoon. We got her a silicone tooth brush that she really liked to chew! During the day, we can help her with the amber necklace (we've also put it on her as an anklet when she was younger and now, she wears it around her neck and doesn't mess with it) but at night it seems to be really bad so we give her acetaminophen. I've tried ibuprophen since it lasts longer but she always immediately barfs when I administer it so we've taken that off our list. The acetaminophen works well for her and I usually only have to give her one dose, before bedtime and it seems to take the pain away for her to get to sleep.

Rarely, she'll wake and need a second dose. And I did end up getting some Cooling Cucumber Orajel for her molars since they've really given her more trouble than the other 8 teeth. She gets mad when I put in on her gums but then, once she feels the numbing/cooling, she seems to be relieved.

I dunno about the other BFing mamas, but I can tell when her teeth are hurting because she'll try to create "counter pressure" on her mouth when she nurses and her teeth dig in to my nipples. She's not biting me, but I imagine it to be similar to using one's finger or thumb to press on the area to relieve some of the pain. That's when I know, for sure, she needs some acetaminophen. I've also had success with gently massaging her jaw, face and head...especially at bedtime. She seems to get pain relief and relax when I do it. She would press her fingers on her jaw herself, so I just started to do it for her. I remember when I have braces that pressing on my face would help relieve the pain, so I imagine it must be similar for babies.

  • Oh! I also forgot to say - both my boys also love (and I mean LOVE) this teether. I don't know what makes it better than the others for them, but they both adore it.

also try the spot right behind the earlobe.  it helps open/relieve any pressure in the ear canal which is often intertwined with teething pain.

Yes! Libby has that one too and LOVES it...especially since it has a bumble bee, lady bug, etc. on it. Those little wings must get all the sore places on their teeth!
