Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Late pre-term moms

Did your LO have their 6 week growth spurt/6 week fussy period at their adjusted age or actual age? LO is 10 weeks actual/6 weeks adjusted and he's just awful right now. Actually, he's been pretty awful since he was 6 weeks actual age, and we've been waiting for it to decrease. Please tell me there's hope! I go back to work in a month and I really can't imagine leaving him with anyone while he's like this.

He is on Zantac for reflux, but I think we need to try something else as he's still arching his back and is just so cranky. He sleeps ok at night (we get one 4-5 hour stretch at night followed by 2 hour wakings), but is just miserable during the day. He has a fussy spell in the morning then naps fairly well during the day, then has another screaming period at night. I honestly think that he may only be quiet and awake for about 10-15 minutes a day --the rest of the time he's either screaming, eating or sleeping.

We haven't really had consistent smiles yet, and I sometimes worry that he's just miserable and in pain and that's why he isn't smiling yet.

  • Ours was born at 36w5d, so almost full term, but only 4lbs. It's only been in the last few days (she's 11 weeks on Friday) that she's been less fussy and more smiley.

She was really fussy, and ate all the time between 5 weeks and 9 weeks, but things have really leveled off since then.

    Good luck!

  • DS was also 35w6d, but was pretty chunky for that (6 lbs 7oz).  He had a really fussy period right around 6 weeks where he ate every hour for 24 hours and then slept a lot the next day, so I think he was right on track for the 6 week growth spurt.  Every baby is different, though, and growth spurt estimates are just that - estimates.

If it helps, DS also only had what seemed like 20 minutes a day when he was quietly alert at that age.  The rest of the time he was hungry, sleeping, or PO'd because he was getting a diaper change or a bath.  A month is a huge amount of time when you're talking about this age.  I've seen so many changes in my DS since he was born.  He's gotten a lot calmer and more alert in general in the last month, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.  Also, your DS is sleeping great!  We just started getting longer stretches in the last couple of weeks.  Before that, it was pretty much every 3 hours on the nose.

  • Hi there. My son was born at 35 weeks (he is 7 weeks, 2 weeks adjusted) and for the last week has been incredibly fussy. I have been fearful as well that he may be delayed and the fussiness may increase and/or stick around for awhile... He is also crying and/or eating if awake.

Additionally, he hasn't smiled yet (beyond the sleeping lopsided thing). I am assuming it is because he was early and I am waiting VERY impatiently for him to grin at me!
