Hi guys. I just found this board a couple days ago and thought you could help me out.
Do your kids have email addresses? At what age did they get one? How do you even get them one because I don't think I can get her one from gmail? She's asked for one and while I don't necessarily mind, I want to have full control over it. I think it would be good for her to practice her language skills if she is typing out emails to her grandparents or aunts/uncles.
Re: Kids email?
Jakob got an email when he was 5, it was when we moved to Texas so he could keep in touch with my parents. DH set it up and put down all of his own info, so technically the account belongs to DH. But its Jakob's email.
He uses it to send emails to family and for a couple different logins...like Webkinz and Club Penguin.
Honestly, I don't check it. Our laptop stays in the kitchen though, so I always know what he's doing. And he's really good about asking the use the computer and telling us what he wants to do on it.
We opened an email account for DD last year when she was in 4th grade. She rarely used it last year. This year she has used it quite a bit more, emailing friends, and writing teachers when she's home sick to ask for homework. My dad sends her forwarded emails that are cute or funny. Her friends have not discovered FB yet, and hardly any of them have cell phones. So emailing each other after school seems like a fun, novel idea.
Since I set up her account, I know her login/password, etc. I check on her inbox occasionally, just to make sure she's not getting a ton of weird stuff or spam. No problems there so far.
DS, who is 6, really has no need for email yet. He hasn't expressed an interest yet at all. When he expresses an interest, we'll think about it.
