NBR: downtown Houston help

I know there are a few people here in the Houston TX area, and I'm looking for food suggestions. I've only been to the Clearlake area, not downtown. I'm travelling there for one night for work, staying at the Hotel Indigo near the Houston Galleria; I guess this is uptown? I'm landing at IAH around 5:30pm, so I definitely want to have an idea of where to go for dinner pretty quickly once I get to the hotel (which will probably take longer due to rush hour, urgh). The meal is covered but I don't want to be obnoxious and break the bank; and I definitely don't want the Cheesecake Factory or Rainforest Cafe at the mall. Any suggestions about where to get a good meal, or type of cuisine I should look for? Thanks! Yes

Don?t head downtown.  Stay in the Galleria area.

There are several options in Uptown park (at 610 and Post Oak) - sushi, the Tasting Room (a wine bar with good food), quicker options like Pot Belly's, a great cupcake bakery (Crave), etc.

Grand Lux is across from the Galleria and is good (it's owned by Cheesecake factory but it a lot better).  TruLucks is down the road (Westheimer and Sage) but is definitely pricier.  Pesce is also very good and it is at W. Alabama and Kirby.

There is also a decent Mexican place (Escalantes) and a PF Changs down Westheimer (inside the loop) in a shopping area called Highland Village.

And a good Italian place right inside of the area call Grotto.

I'll stop b/c I could go on and on (we live near all of this) - so many options in that area.

  • Or you could go just inside the loop on Westheimer and get Sullivan's. Delicious steaks if I may say so. Bit pricey though.

Sorry I can't be of much help. I may live in Houston but downtown is completely foreign to me. I don't go there because every time I do I get lost.

That and I don't go to nice restaurants (never really did).

  • And going from IAH to the Galleria at 5:30, I am sooooooooooooooooo sorry. If you're not driving, bring a book. You just might finish it.

A friend of mine swears by Canyon Cafe as well. It's not the greatest, but it does have decent food. It's at the corner of Post Oak and Westheimer.

It's actually not as bad as you would think b/c she will be coming South when the commuting bunch will be migrating back up North.

There will be a bottle neck on 610 but, overall, it won't be as horrible as traffic can be here in Houston.  I made that drive every Friday at 5:15 when returning from business travel for 3 years and it would take about 30 minutes to get from IAH to the downtown area.

  • Thanks to both of you Smile Taking notes, and will see what I'm hungry for that night. Right now a wine bar and cupcakes sound awesome...One of the things I'm looking foward to for this trip is some uninterrupted Kindle time, so if the taxi drive does take a while, oh well; but that's good to know LCB!

If you want to stay away from chain's I would suggest Arturo's in uptown park, la vista which is a few miles west of the galleria, or as lcb said Escalantes in highland village. Your drive won't be pleasant but it won't be terrible. Have fun!!

  • If you want cupcakes- Crave is in Uptown park, so not too far from the Galleria and very yummy.
