Recovering from a bad tear...

My LO had to be delivered quickly by vacuum because his heart rate kept dropping after every contraction (his cord was wrapped around his neck). I ended up having a really bad tear...partial 3rd degree. Just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience, and if so, how long it took to recover? I gave birth 5 days ago and I'm still sooo sore. They had offered me percocet but I didn't like the way it made me feel, so I've just been taking motrin. It's been pretty tough just to move around... especially getting in/out of bed or off the couch. This was my first time ever getting stitches, so I'm paranoid that they're not healing well.

Re: Recovering from a bad tear...

  • Hang in there sweetie. I had a 3rd degree tear and a tear up my labia...not fun. I got 800 mg of Ibuprofen and a narcotic. I only took the motrin once in a while and didn't take the narcotic (I didn't like the way it made me feel either). Even the ibuprofen I cut in half because it made me feel weird. I am 13 days pp and I am feeling 100x better. Just be really careful getting up and down and take it slowly. I mentioned this before but I've been using the removable shower head instead of the peri bottle, you may want to wait a few more days to do it but you can try just don't blast it at your vag. I also sat in the bath a few times a day. Change your pad at every bathroom trip (depending on how much you are bleeding but it can't hurt). The nurse at my Dr's office told me to keep it as dry as possible (I know all the ladies say to use tucks and dermaplast but I didn't) and it seemed to help me to keep it dryer. I also used the peri or got in the shower everytime I went to the bathroom. It made me feel cleaner and better. I know it's a lot of work but if you're not comfortable it's miserable. I was paranoid too like it was infected and stuff but I'm sooo much better now, definitely feels weird down there, dry, itchy (stitches) but it will get better. Again though take it slow getting in and out of bed and off the couch. Feel better, I really started feeling better a few days ago. Do your kegels too. I also found it easier to be in bed, nursing, watching tv and stuff then sitting on the couch. The couch seemed to make me bleed more, not sure why, maybe too much pressure on my bum from sitting up. Don't be afraid to call the dr. too just to make yourself feel better.

  • I had two small tears and I was still a little sore up until like 3 days ago.  Though, I think I stopped taking meds for the pain at about 1 week and that was with small amount of healing.  Now it is just annoying because it itches.

The numbing cream they gave me was a dream!!!  I used it all the time!

  • I was sore for about four weeks. Sitz baths and kegels helped immensely.

  • I too had a really bad tear.  I am 13 days out and still sore.  But I know it's healing because I've been itchy lately.  It's getting up and down from seats that's the most difficult.  And then if I do a lot more walking then I have been lately,  I feel a bit more sore.  Taking the Ibuprofin has helped, along with the peri bottle and sitz baths.

  • I had a partial 3rd degree tear with Caleb. I was swollen for the first week and a cold compress was the a big relief. I was given ibuprofen and hydrocodine, but after 10 days, I didn't need to take anything.

  • Have they given anything to you to dress your stitches with? I had a 1/2 episiotomy and a 2nd degree tear. I am now 13 days out and just noticed today when I cough that I don't feel the pain down there anymore (it was always the worst), I guess I am completely healed.

The hospital had me dressing my pad with tucks pads, spraying epi foam on top and spraying the "wound" with some aerosol spray. I noticed that the spray was making my wound stick to the pad and the tucks pads were irritating it as well. As soon as I stopped using everything with the pad, I noticed I was healing a lot quicker. I still spray the area with water after I go to the bathroom and wipe with the tucks pads just because I have them and it soothes the area but I haven't had that "ow" feeling when I get up and down since I quit using everything that they recommended me to.

  • I had a 3rd degree tear (forceps delivery). I'm nearly 5 weeks out and still very sore. I still have internal swelling (I can feel it when I touch down there... no, not like that) Wink. It hurts to sit certain ways. When I get my heart rate up at all I have bad pain down there. Hurts to cough, sneeze, laugh hard. I tried to do a crunch and it killed me down there.

I guess everyone is different, but it's taking me a while to recover.
