Is this a name or is it a kre8tiv take on a classic

Irini

This is a name from my hospital nursery today. It it pronounced like Irene except with a long e sound. Eye-reen-ee

Did she get creative or is this a name I should know?

  • Never heard of it. It's ugly to look at. And even more ugly to pronounce!

Yeah, when she said it I almost said "What? Where did you get that name?" I stopped myself.

  • Irina is a name, I've never heard of Irini. It may be common in another language, though. Irina is i-ree-nah with the R rolled.

  • I've heard it before, I believe it may be Russian or Eastern European in origin.

  • It looks like it could possibly be an Arabic/African name, but....it's not coming up on BTN.

The pronunciation is dangerously close to "irony."

  • I believe that it's a Greek Orthodox saint's name. The Island of Santorini was named after her.

  • I knew a woman named this. She was Greek. I always thought it was just short for Irina. It might be a variation on it though, like Anita or other diminuitives that are their own names now.
  • I guess the mom could have been Greek. She is caucasian and so was dad so unless they have an ethnicity in their background, maybe that was it. Whatever the case, I don't really like it. I almost think it sounds too close to weenie.

  • Sounds like a bastardization of Irina.

  • Pretty sure it's Greek.  I have a friend from Greece and she named one of her daughters this.

  • I went to high school with an Irini.  I thought it was Middle Eastern, but I could see Greek too.

  • Irini is a Greek name and it's used in Middle Eastern countries as well. The easy thing to do if you don't recognize a name or you can't find it on any usual baby name websites is to do a Facebook friend search of the first name. There were quite a few Irinis.

In the UK the name Irene is often pronounced eye-ree-nee.

This.  I believe it's also one of the lead characters from the fabulous Forsythe Saga.  Pronounced Irini, but spelled Irene.
