Cloth Diapering

Laughed at, small to medium size vent

Now, I understand this could be a long way off, as my hubby and I are TTC, but our plan is to go the cloth diapering route.  We have done research, talked to friends, etc and it is something that we are really committed to.  Not committed to trying...committed to doing.  I shared this with some varsity moms and they laughed and said something to the effect of "we'll see!"  From what I know of them, none of them have tried it, but with all of the pro's to cloth diapering, I do not understand why it is so laughable.  I don't know if the "technology" is so different now that it is much easier, but the thought of spending so much on disposables, the chemicals, late night runs to the store for diapers...I think it is a better option for our family.

  • I think people who say that don't understand what cloth diapers are like nowadays.  I have shared coin-op laundry so that's why I don't right now, but I'm getting on board in a few weeks when I move and have my own washer.

  • Don't let them get you down! I am in the process of adopting and am also committed to CDs. I even converted my sister who is pregnant, after showing her all my CD!

I am unusual and live in a very "crunchy" city, so I don't get this a lot. I get some strange looks when I mention it, but people around here are pretty accepting of anything.

I think it is much easier now with the technology available in washing machines, dryers, cloth diapering detergents, new fabric technology, etc. Also, we have something many moms didn't have 20 years ago... a support system! We have the benefit of each other here to problem solve our diapering issues to help us all keep with it through the long haul. Many moms 20 years ago had some leaking or stink issues and gave up due to lack of support and options.

(Just some fuel for a rebuttal if you choose! Probably easier to just show them through your actions of CDing your little one and watch them throw their money away.)

  • Every mom I know, including mine, laughed when I said I was going to do this. We're going on six months of CD and some of them who laughed now say they want to do it with their next kids.
  • Thanks everyone!
  • Don't let them get you down! I just started CDing a few weeks ago, wanting to do it part time, because DH was not on board. But after seeing how easy it was, and knowing that I do all the laundry, he now puts fluff on that cute little butt every time he changes her! My parents, grandparents, and many others laughed and told me how they would leak, were stinky, and told me they would keep their disposables. I told them to keep their disposables for when they're babysitting, but when I showed them a NEW cloth diaper (we use pockets) they couldn't get over it! Now they're more interested in trying them out! Most people hear cloth and assume it's white gerber squares with pins and rubber pants!!

  • People will question your parenting choices across the board.  You need to learn now just to let it roll off your back.  Just do what is best for you and your family and leave it at that.

This.  In fact, if it bugs you to have them saying things like this, then I'd recommend just keeping your plans to yourself.  They'll have a much harder time telling you it won't work if they find out after you've been doing it for a while.
