Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Did your DH/SO eat while you were laboring?

I'm watching One Born Every Minute (as I do every week ;) and every single guy eats some delicious meal and sucks down some refreshing drink in front of the wives while they're laboring and obviously can't eat.  DH never ate in front of me- I remember being sooooo hungry.  I think I would've killed him if he had shown up with some yummy meal.  He ate a few times but always just ran down to the hospital cafeteria and ate quick on his way back up.

Just curious because it always makes me laugh when I see it- so did your DH/SO eat while you were starving?! ;)

Re: Did your DH/SO eat while you were laboring?

  • DH did eat a sandwich and have some coffee later in the evening. I was not hungry, but being the coffee lover that I am, it was hard for me to see/smell the coffee without wanting just a sip!

This.  During early labor we had delicious egg sandwiches on bagels while we walked around the block in midtown Manhattan!  Then as labor progressed I don't remember him eating much, but I had a few snacks here and there and lots of water and juice to drink.

  • i could eat/drink whatever I wanted while in labor, they did say nothing heavy. I had a turkey sandwhich around lunch time when contractions were inconsistant. Once I got into active labor I just needed liquids, didn't want anything to eat anyways. But I do remember at one point in our walks we had walked to subway and I sat down and labored while DH ate his tuna grinder... I kept my eyes closed the whole time and barely remember it. Now I can't believe he had me sit there and wait but I was so focused I didn't really care. I can't imagine what the workers thought though! lol I was going every 3-5 mins and they were strong!
  • I went 36 hours without food, but I don't remember being hungry at all.  I did make my H eat though.  I didn't want him to be starving on my account.  I also made him sleep and shower.  It worked out well for me though, because he was nice and rested and full and clean when Asher Ben came and he was able to be fully with it when I needed him to help me a ton!

You know, I honestly can not remember.  Which is saying something since I was in labor with the second for 27 hours...I honestly don't think DH ate, but maybe he did!
  • Not that I remember.

  • DH didn't eat while I was in labor but DS was born within an hour of us arriving at the hospital.  Depending on your provider you can eat and drink during labor too.

  • Yes. All my visitors did.  They all ate a big subway meal while hanging out in my room.  My husband also brought a delicious smelling meal into my recovery room when I was still on a liquid diet.  Even the nurses gave him a hard time for that one.

  • I'm surprised at how many people weren't allowed to eat. I thought that was kind if an old school thing.

  • My husband did. I made him dinner before we went to the hospital. Yes, you heard that right and yes I must be out of my mind. My contractions were about 5 minutes apart when he got off work. So I cooked then we left. I labored all night so there was no need to eat again until after she was born. I did make him go eat breakfast after she was born. I don't think I could have ate even if I wanted to, food was not appealing at all.

a lot of doctors who are quick to interventions/surgery don't like you to eat b/c it complicates giving you drugs during surgery.

  • Well, to be fair, you CAN eat while in labor, but most hospitals discourage it. It's just one of the many "standard procedure" things that isnt necessary but that they do anyway.

I truly dont remember if my DH ate or not. I'm sure he did, as I was in labor for over a day. But I was going sans drugs so I wasnt really focusing on anything but getting through each contraction. I never felt hungry, though! I didnt even realize how much time had passed until it was over.

  • He did, only because he passed out when I got my epidural and the nurse made him eat a tray of breakfast.  I did eat right before I was induced the night before, so I wasn't totally starving.

  • Dh's parents brought him Portillos for lunch bc he came straight from work and hadn't had lunch yet.  He went out into the waiting room to eat it though.  At that point my contrax were bearable, so I just sat and chatted with my mom and MIL and hungrily munched on my ice chips.

But they also brought us Boston Market after delivery, so I was a happy camper

  • I ate up until breakfast at 10 am on Thursday when they decided I was in active labor and staying in the hospital.  From that point on I wasn't able to eat but DH ate two lunches (mine and his) and his dinner.  We didn't think it was going to take as long as it did but my labor stalled.

  • mine had mac n' cheese.

I encouraged this though because I ate before I left for the hospital.  DH left from work and never got a chance to eat lunch or dinner.

Now that you say that, mine did too.  I had forgotten about that.  The nurses suggested it since they didn't allow him to be in the room for it anyway.

  • I went into labor at 3am. Around 9am he went down to the cafeteria and ate a quick snack and my mom hung out with me, but he didn't have the nerve to bring it up to the room and eat in front of me. I hadn't eaten anything since like 6 the night before so I probably would have throat punched him.

  • I actually told DH to go down to the cafeteria and eat.  He's an eater and I sure as hell didn't need him up there all whiny.  I wasn't very hungry anyway.

  • My water broke around 2:30 in the afternoon, just a little while after I'd finished lunch.  I had to have antibiotics because I was Strep B positive, so my nurses made me eat a light dinner (I think it was a cup of soup and a salad) for dinner so that the antibiotics wouldn't upset my system.  That was around 5:30/6pm.  DH ate dinner at that time too, and after that neither one of us ate until breakfast the next morning (she was born at 1:30am).

  • He ate, just not in front of me and honestly I was too sick to my stomach to think about eating. If I felt like I needed something I had a honey stick or ice chips.
  • I ate a lot during labor, every 2 hours I was hungry.  My sister brought me a 6 piece chicken nugget and a medium fry from Mcdonalds... i inhaled the nuggets, all i wanted was protein

  • Yes, he hadn't eaten so the MW made him order breakfast and told me to get something if it looked good. I had him order me a fruit cup, but I was far enough along at that point that one bite told me it wasn't a good idea.

  • My water broke at 2:30am, contractions came hard, fast and painful 15 minutes later. I showered, dried my hair and got dressed and remember sitting at my kitchen table doubled over in pain shoving a granola bar and some gatorade in my mouth as DH is screaming at me to get in the car b/c my contractions were coming really close together. I wanted to eat before we left because I knew I couldn't have anything once I got to the hospital. Got to the hospital around 4:30 am. DH had some snacks (crackers, etc) during my labor but nothing else. Baby came at 12 noon exactly. Honestly I could have cared less if he ate a 4 course meal while I labored, I had NO interest in food. I think he was too nervous to eat though. About an hour aft I delivered they gave me lunch which I gave to DH as by that time my epidural migraines had kicked in.

  • Nope! My DF didn't eat anything, but then again, my labor was pretty quick.

  • DH was in the room and actually eating while I was pushing DD out.

He was dealing with DS though, so it was ok.  It was early in the morning, and food was a good distraction for DS to stop acting up in the room,  while I was pushing.

  • No.  I kept trying to get him to eat b/c I know how he gets migraines if he doesn't, but he wouldn't.  He did have Gatorade though.  I had to practically force him to go get it b/c he didn't want to leave me.

  • DH did, but not in front of me.  My mom stayed in the room while he went and got some chips.  I wouldn't expect him to not eat during my 36 hour labor.

  • MH didn't eat in front of me during either labor/delivery.  We actually discussed it beforehand and I let him know that wouldn't be cool since I would likely be hungry and unable to eat!  He is diabetic though, so he knew if he needed to eat crackers or something to keep his sugar level that obviously I would understand.

  • By the time the docs knew I was in active labor it was only 20 min until I was pushing. Therefore, no time for him to eat and no time for me to be overly hungry. If I would have had a long labor and DH was eating in front of me then that would be different.
