2nd Trimester

whats with all the opinions from ppl?

So I work in a large company and there are ALOT of pregnant women here.  Growing up I always thought that 12 weeks was normal for maternity leave.  My company offers STD for 6 weeks with vaginal delivery and 8 with c-sections, but my company has the policy where my job is secure for up to 12 weeks I guess this has to do with the FMLA).  I commented to a few co-workers (one of which is pregnant) that I was planning on taking 12 weeks as long as DH and I will have enough money saved up and they made it out like that was absurd.  I know people take less, but I thought 12 wasn't an unusual amount of time to be home with a newborn.

Oh and I got the..."well its a first kid thing, you'll feel different with your next."  Um, no it's not a first kid thing, it's a "this is my right and the way my family does things, thing."

Oh and for the record, my boss mentioned to me "I know you'll want to be out for 12 weeks", so I know her and I are on the same page.

Why can't people just smile and nod when they don't agree instead of having to make obnoxious comments.    Anyone else annoyed with comments like this...or had a similar situation?

  • You will get unsolicited advice about your kid forever -- from judgment about maternity leave, to personal questions about your breasts, and all kinds of advice and comments about how to raise your kid.  Sigh.  People just suck.

  • I agree with you.  Not only that it is not anyone else's business than yours how much Mat leave you take.  Why should they make you feel bad for wanting to spend the maximum amount of time with your newborn.

I am from the UK, where everyone gets 6 months Mat leave without question, and I had never heard of someone coming back before then.  I struggle even to think about only getting 3 months leave and having to leave my 3 month old, that is going to break my heart.

It depends so much on each indivudial, how much their career means to them, their culture etc... if I could I wouldn't work at all for the first couple of years.,.. those are such precious times that go by fast and you never get them back.  I think it must be hard for Mom's who work full-time, I just dont think I could be away from my child for that long.  But in this economy, needs must!  Its harder now-a-days than ever before and each family has to do what it right for them.

  • I personaly feel that 12 weeks is NOT enough. I am going to take at least 5 months if not more (i live in CA) Those people should keep their opinions to themselfs. Why should you leave your baby after only 8 weeks? This is your life..not thiers.

  • I hope to take 12 weeks too (but the second 6 will be unpaid, so still up in the air).  My boss has encouraged me to take 12 weeks.  She did and said it's a great experience to stay home that long.

Those that disagree can go kick rocks...it's my money, my family, and really my right to take off, right??  I wouldn't let it get to you when the opinions start coming in...

  • I'm glad we all agree on here :)  I did mention this a minute ago to some other co-workers who 100% agreed with me that 12 weeks is normal, and by no means a large amount of time.

After reading the posts, I now wish I lived in the UK.  I like your maternity leave much better!

  • DH gives me a hard time about wanting three months.. I took three months with DD because I was put on bedrest a month before she was born (actually two but held out) and she came three weeks early if she came on time I would have went back to work when she was a month and a half or so..

And I only went back when I did because work was threatening to change my postion.. and they still changed it when I went back.. this time three months no exceptions.. more so with two little ones and dh only staying home a week..my mom has told me she had people return to work two weeks after.. no way.. we can afford the time so im taking it.
  • My boss keeps making the comment that I am going to want to take 6 weeks off when the baby is born.  I have already talked to HR and I get 12 weeks FMLA and 11 are paid as short term disability so in my mind it would be silly not to take the full 12 weeks.  But as far as anyone else goes to each their own.  I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to spend as much time as possible with your LO.

  • Ppfft! 12 weeks is not near enough!!

I wish we could all ban together and get something passed! It saddens me very much. So many other countries have laws for their mommas. but no the USA has one of the worst!

You dont have to live in the UK to get more than 12 weeks off. I live in CA and get at least 5 months and can take longer but unpaid. If your referring to the fact that UK gets a year then I to wish I lived there! Our laws should really be diffirent. It saddens me.

  • Just wait, you'll also get a flow of non-coworker opinions saying that they can't believe you could leave your baby after just 3 months. You cannot win with other people, do what's right for you and your family. And yes, everyone is right. Pregnancy (and motherhood) is a target for unwanted advice. Enjoy! :P

That's definitely the common one. I'm really surprised there are people expecting you to want to go back sooner.

It is so sad.  A new Mom needs time with her newborn, I'd hate to feel like I were missing out on developments and milestones.  My sister has just had a baby and she has a year off, 6 months paid, and 6 half pay.  I am from the UK, but I live in CA with my husband, and of course thinking about giving up a years Mat leave for 12 weeks is sickening!!!  I just dont think I am going to be able to bring myself to leave my child.  :(

If you live in CA than why are you only taking 12 weeks? We have a law called family bodding time. and it comes afetr the FMLA...make sure your using all the time the state has to offer and educate yourself on it. My company is huge so maybe thats why I get over 5 motnhs leave?? Smaller companies might not have as much?

Ha! I can beat that! I'm stationed in Germany right now and they get 2 years!!! Technically, it's 1 yr paid, 1 yr unpaid but can come back after 1 year. I always loved the phrase, "if I want your opinion I'll give it you." I'd never actually say that but I heard it in a movie once :)

  • From reading the posts on here... Everyone should be thankful that the majority of ppl get 12 weeks at least. I will only 6 weeks, but am thankful that I get that without being charged any extra leave. As for people giving opinions, this is my first baby and I have heard tons of things already from people but its all been supportive since I'm single and they know not to be rude. So if people are giving unwanted advice, I would politely tell them to buzz off. Everyone writes their life story differently and its best written through personal experience not through the eyes of another.
