Pregnant after IF

Would You Leave The Country If PG?

DH and I are trying to plan a summer vacation.  I wanted to rent a beach house in Nantucket for a week, he wants to rent a little villa/apt. in Spain (!).  I think both would be awesome, and I don't like thinking this far in advance b/c I'm nervous and like to take it 1 day at a time, but, hopefully, I would be in 2nd tri at that point.  Do you think it'd be sketchy to be in a foreign country at that point in your pregnancy?

Re: Would You Leave The Country If PG?

  • I think it's a personal decision, but if it were me, no I would not travel out of the country. I'd be too worried about something happening and not getting proper medical care. I think the worry I would experience would be enough to ruin the vacation. But like I said, it's a personal decision. A beach house in Nantucket sounds wonderful!!!

  • I'd probably play it safe and do a beach house! Personally, I've had a really rough time with sickness so I'd be hesitant to really plan anything that I might miss out on the full experience of. Did that make sense?

M/s aside, I'd probably still vote the beach house! :)

P.S how awesome are your options?!

  • We are going to skip SIL's wedding in France because DH is too nervous to go out of the country while I'm pregnant. I will be at the end of my 2nd tri in at that point.

We are also going to skip my friend's wedding in September which will be 150 miles away from home. At that time I will be 4 weeks away from my due date.

  • I think it depends on the country and what part of the country you're in. Spain isn't underdeveloped or anything like that. As long as your staying in an area that isn't completely rurual where you could get medical attention if you HAD to have it, I would go for it!

I think the hardest part will be the long plane ride. Just make sure to get up and walk around at least everyhour  you're awake on the flight and you should be fine.

I would go as long as it wasn't in the boonies or third world.

I went to Tokyo (twice) during my first pg for business trips, and I felt OK because I was always in the city.  I'm begging my hubby for a far away trip before this baby comes.  I also have many friends who have taken trips to other countries - again, in well known places.

Having said that, if you feel uneasy about it, and you have a closer to home option that you're excited about, I'd say go there.

  • DH and I went to Jamaica for a week when I was 21/22 weeks.  I didn't feel uncomfortable at all about being in a foreign country. I have had zero complications throughout this pregnancy though and am well traveled.

It's a personal decision, but I would do it in a heartbeat.

  • I agree with everyone-as long as you're going somewhere near a city/somewhere with a good hospital, then I think you are fine. DH and I are going to Grand Cayman at the beginning of May, after I talked to my OB about places that had good medial care, should I need it. Maybe check with you OB and ask their opinion?

  • We actually just had this conversation last night.  In our attempt to live a normal life, we booked a 2 week vacation to Ireland in July.  We wanted something to look forward to in case our cycle failed....

We ultimately decided to cancel and are likley going to do a beach trip here.  While I think you'd be fine going to Europe, I was worried about being comfortable on the flight.  Plus, much of Europe (at least for us)  is enjoying the fine beverages :).  I couldn't see spending the money when all I could drink is water.

  • We had this same discussion. One of my BF's is getting married in Mexico. Each week I've had some type of condition, spotting, bleeding, flu, etc. I've been planning to attend the wedding since their engagement, but DH is worried about medical care if something were to happen. I'd be at the end of my second trimester.

I sent my passport for renewal and am waiting for the new one to come back (also prolonging the decision making). We may just purchase a refundable trip and then make a last minute decision when the time comes.

But honestly, any vacation would be welcomed by me, you have some great choices!

  • This is a very personal choice, but for me, I wouldn't leave the country during pregnancy...  Knowing all the things that they've found along the way and some of the complications I've had, I'd prefer to be close to the appropriate medical facilities.

Nantucket is BEAUTIFUL!  We take the ferry over 2-3 times each summer for long weekends.  (We won't be going this year, but that's okay!  We have new traditions to start with our LOs!!)

Good Luck with your decision!  Big Smile

  • It is a very personal decision and of course my opinion is based on my previous loss, but DH and I have already decided we aren't going ANYWHERE this summer. I was on my way back from a vacation last year in June when my water broke at 17.5 weeks. I am terrified to leave the city this time around!

  • It definitely does depend on your personal comfort with the issue. I was totally comfortable with the idea and had in fact planned a trip to Cabo for my cousin's wedding around my 29th/30th week. I know Mexico isn't the safest place, but we had planned to play it safe this vacation and just stay on the resort property the entire time relaxing. It just so happened, though, that they identified the vasa previa issue (which they later said I don't have), so as a result, I had to cancel.

One thing I would say is that regardless of what you end up deciding to do whether it be Spain, Nantucket, etc., definitely get travel insurance or make sure you won't have a problem cancelling if you need to. I'm generally not one to buy travel insurance, but this time I did knowing I'd be in my 3rd trimester, and I'm super glad that I did.

As an aside, my DH is from Spain, and it is very safe with top notch hospitals should anything happen... although, I'm sure nothing will! :)

I am moving from the states to Germany when I am about 18 weeks. However, my situation is unique in that our insurance would still cover any issues if I had problems in transist (my husband is in the military).

I would not travel/go far late into my third trimester, though.

  • If you're comfortable going to Europe I say go for it! I went to Europe when I was pg with DS and I had a great time. It is more challenging to travel once the little one is in your arms. But if it it will cause more stress than fun, Nantucket is gorgeous too.

  • No.  Being that I haven't left the country (besides Canada) anyway, I don't think I have to worry about that anyway.  I would be too worried about long flights, something happening overseas, and the quality of medical care.  Not worth it to me.

  • I traveled to Manchester, England the day after I found out I was pregnant (~8 weeks pg) and to Mexico when I was about 14 weeks pregnant. I was careful about what I ate and drank while in Mexico, but otherwise enjoyed myself.

Spain isn't a "sketchy" place, so I would go and have fun! :-)

  • I would first check with your doc to see if they have any travel restrictions. If they give you the green light, I think I'd go to Spain. For me, that would be a once in a lifetime trip and I could go to Nantucket anytime ( I live in MA). Also, ditto the travel insurance in case anything comes up/changes.

  • They say 2nd tri is the time to travel if you are going to and as long as you are going to a country (and region) with good facilities and you know where they are (and some of the language is always good too), you should be fine.  We are planning to go to Italy for our 5th anniversary in late summer, and I could very well be pg, and I'm not worried at all.  Definitely something to talk to your OB about too.  GL!

  • It definitely is a personal decision.

If it were me and I wasnt traveling to a 3rd world country, I would do it. Also I'd check with your OB and ensure you can travel for that distance.

DH is from Russia - and if he wanted to go there when/if we get PG, I would go.

  • As pp have said it is a very personal decision.  My family-in-law went to Mexico during my 27 week and DH and I decided that we wouldn't go with them because I am pregnant.  I had a rough first 22 weeks with morning sickness and was just starting to feel more confident with my pregnancy the weekend before they left.  And then I had a leakage issue and ended up in L&D with a pre-term labour scare.  So glad we had decided not to go.  Now everything is going well again in my pregnancy but I don't regret our decision not to travel.

I guess what I am trying to say is that things can change very quickly. So if you decide to go to Spain see if you are able to get a refund if you need to stay at home instead for any reason.  It sounds like Spain has a great medical system so as long as you can get insurance you should be good.  I am just a "what if" type of thinker.   The beach house sounds lovely! :)

  • I'm going to visit my sister this summer in Canada and I will be 7mo pregnant. It's Canada so I figure I'll be ok and if not only a couple of hours to the border if necessary.

Beach house sounds great but Spain (said in a whiny longing voice) tough choice but both sound great!

  • I'm headed to Mexico for a friend's wedding in May. If things go as they've been, we will be 17-18 weeks.  Both my OB and RE were fine with it.  We did purchase the travel insurance to be on the safe side, and I contacted the resort  to ask how close the nearest hospital was.  There is an "Americanized" hospital 15 minutes away, and they have a physician who comes to the resort every day.  I am still not 100% comfortable with traveling there yet, but hey, I'm not 100% comfortable with the fact that I'm actually pregnant, so who knows how I will feel come May!

  • I bet it probably is safe since you're going to a developed country, however if it were me, I prob would not because I'd be too afraid. But I tend to be afraid that everything is going to mess up this pregnancy, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

  • i LOVE spain and think you will be fine traveling there. we may travel out of the country this summer to either france or italy. we have not decided but we talked it over with our RE and he was ok with it. as long as you walk on the plane and rest if every now and then while walking/touring you should be fine. the only thing getting in the way of booking ours for sure is a big wedding in cali this june.
