Vent: sick LO

(feel free to ignore, I just need to get this out somewhere before I explode)

I am so grateful that my mom watches DD for us so we don't have to pay childcare, but she is being beyond ridiculous since DD is sick.  DD has a cold.  She is congested and has a pretty runny nose, but the fever went away Monday, and she is also cutting 4 teeth which isn't helping anything. My mom, who is a hypochondriac and exaggerates EVERYTHING, is beyond ticked off that we haven't taken her to the doctor.

I've called the doctor, they've assured me that it is a normal cold and what to look for, but I get to my mom's to get DD and she tells me all these "symptoms" DD had while there (which magically disappear the moment we leave there, my mom only has her 5 hr a day the past 2 days at the moment, 2+ hours of that she is asleep).  So far DD has been "diagnosed" by my mom these past 2 days with asthma, severe allergies, bronchitis, respiratory distress, and the latest was strep and an ear infection, all in an effort for me to take her to the doctor to be told it's just a cold.

Add to that that I've been stressing keeping DD RF, my mom didn't want to listen until I sent her the CNN article about the AAP recommending RF to 2 (apparently my word alone wasn't good enough).  She says she'll turn her back around!  So she's had her FF for who knows how long now.  I love my mom and I know she thinks she's doing what is best, but I am so close to putting DD in daycare right now if we had the money budgeted for it.   She'd probably never talk to me again too if we did that, but I am just so done being the bad guy in all this.

  • Oh man, that sounds so tough.  I can't imagine what it must be like arguing with your mom about all of this stuff.  I guess you have to decide how much you're willing to put up with, really.  If it were a caregiver other than family, you'd probably not hesitate to put her into a different childcare setting.

If you decide that you want to put her in daycare, you can always use the excuse that you want her to have more structure and interaction with other children.  I think that's actually a good idea at this age.

I'm so sorry that you have all this on your plate.  Having a sick kid is hard enough, without someone challenging your decisions.

Thanks Katie!  I knew it would be like this going in, I was just trying to be optimistic.  We had problems when DD was little and not sleeping as well, it took my mom finally caring for DD to believe me about how bad she slept and that there wasn't a way to really fix it.  She is usually fine on a daily basis but when stuff like this pops up she can be insufferable.  I know she has DD's best interests at heart and DD is safe in her care, but I just wish she'd see me as the parent and not her "child" in these situations.

  • Are we sisters from another mister? Do we happen to have the same mother? Stick out tongue

Lol, TTT.  I am happy to know though I'm not the only one!  Would you believe I get there to pick DD up and she acts like everything is fine?  I swear she has two personalities sometimes, lol.
