When to see a developmental pediatrician

AJ has been receiving services through EI for about 3 weeks now.  He has speech / feeding 2x a week and Special Education 3x a week.  He is almost 22 months and has 0 words, feeding issues, questionable comprehension, limited (but improving) eye contact, limited (but improving) response to name, etc.

I have scheduled an evaluation with a well known speech / feeding therapist for early April.  This way if there is oral apraxia or something similar, it would be diagnosed then.

Do you think I should also make an appointment with a developmental pediatrician? Would they be able to tell me anything being that AJ is under the age of 2?  Should I just give the EI time and continue with what we are doing?  I have seen small improvements just in the short amount of time we have been working with him...

I just want to do what's best for my son and since you ladies have been through this, I value your opinion.

TIA!!

Re: When to see a developmental pediatrician

  • Go ahead and make an appointment. Sometimes it takes a while to get in anyway. They can make the determination if they want to see them after a little therapy and when he is a little older. It may be good to get a dx early though, as you may be eligible for more services, you never know.
