I just found out about a design contest that ends tomorrow. I am going to try to make some designs on the plane (we are coming home for a visit, leaving this afternoon! Yay!), polish them up tonight, and then figure out how to submit them tomorrow (I have no clue how to work dpi, etc).
So, Moms of boys...
When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find?
What were you tired of?
What colors did you wish was offered?
What colors did you go with?
Ideas in my head...
Pixelated - like computer games, only more generic scenery type. I know I can paint it (see Super Mario Bathroom on my blog), so why not create a fabric like it?
Robots - gear/bots/dots. Maybe some script as well.
Wynken, Blynken and Nod - characters, moons, stars.
* blog youcanmakethat.blogspot.com
** this is to design baby boy fabric. I must submit one design, and then if I am in the top 75, people vote, and then if I am in the top whatever, I have to come up with 5 more designs to make a collection. So above ideas would be several parts/pieces.
*** If i win, I get a chance to design fabric for the Michael Miller line.
Re: Poll for moms of boys
When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find? cowboy themed stuff and surfing stuff. It was impossible to find cowboy stuff that wasn't "western" as well. Also I wished there were mix and match colors in crib skirts that could be used with bumpers depending on what color you preferred
What were you tired of? baby blue and brown, in fact I thought I would scream if I saw another baby blue and brown nursery item
What colors did you wish was offered?reds, denims, yellows
What colors did you go with? denim and yellow

Robots - gear/bots/dots. Maybe some script as well. Maybe spaceships as well?
Wynken, Blynken and Nod - characters, moons, stars.

Good luck to you... how cool would that be?!?
Me personally, I was hoping to find simple stuff without animals or characters. I am more of a bold color type, and there seemed to be a lot of lighter stuff. Of course, I didn't look too hard because my mom and I found a sheet set that she used to make all my stuff and so I stopped looking
I ended up with a blue / red star on white background with a two inch blue / white stripe edging. With two twin sheet sets, she was able to make a skirt, bumper, two curtains, a comforter, two changing pad covers, and a hamper liner.
Let us know when / if we can vote for you!
When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find? Monkey prints that didn't have anything to do with safari or jungle animals.
What were you tired of? Pastels
What colors did you wish was offered? Bolder colors - reds, blues, yellows or neutral colors that weren't pastels - so tans and greens and browns.
What colors did you go with? The only tans and greens and browns line I could find.
When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find? someting like stripes, or polka dots, or more "grown up" fabrics than just animals and cars. color blacks with bright colors, ect..
What were you tired of? animals and cars and pastels.
What colors did you wish was offered? greys and black and white/ black and white with a color pop, orange and green
What colors did you go with? sand and water theme: Blue and yellow walls solid color sheets and curtains, kinda a mish mash
Ideas in my head...

Robots - gear/bots/dots. Maybe some script as well.
Wynken, Blynken and Nod - characters, moons, stars.
More ideas: Eric Carle type animals, Block type designs, puzzles, travel/maps, shapes. I love you for doing this. Boys get the shaft in creativity department.
What were you tired of? Nothing really - I think once old enough the kid should choose their own decor..be it classic or character (age 2/3)
What colors did you wish was offered? I loved green, brown and yellow for gender netural and the walls were already yellow - and found a fair amount. But I also love mod colors - different hues of the same color especially.
What colors did you go with? green, brown and yellow

I love his mod guitar cloth - would love more general music related ones. A male version of B&W damask with boyish accent color would be awesome. Maybe a brown damask with turquioise or.....? And I second the travel/map theme - love that too!
So, Moms of boys...
When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find? Something youthful that fit our style. An infant doesn't care. I bought this. It wasn't my top pick, but it was super inexpensive.
What were you tired of? Cartoony themes.
What colors did you wish was offered? Bolder colors.
What colors did you go with? See above. I bought this for his big boy room.

When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find? Sports themed without being hokey. I didn't want dinosaurs and monkeys playing baseball. I just wanted something that was sporty and I could do my own accents with.
What were you tired of? Jungle/monkey prints.
What colors did you wish was offered? More solid colors, like deep blues and reds ... I liked one quilt from PBK that was deep red with white stars, but they were out.
What colors did you go with? His walls are gray, his trim is official WSU crimson (of course) and he has bedding that has those colors, plus blue, green, some gold, etc. It is sporty, but it took me a while to find something I liked.
When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find? Puppies or puppy paw prints. So hard to find.
What were you tired of? brown and blue seemed to be everywhere.
What colors did you wish was offered?bold colors, reds, yellows etc
What colors did you go with? navy blue and white
Ideas in my head...
Pixelated - like computer games, only more generic scenery type. I know I can paint it (see Super Mario Bathroom on my blog), so why not create a fabric like it? like this idea
Robots - gear/bots/dots. Maybe some script as well.
Wynken, Blynken and Nod - characters, moons, stars.
I could not find anything with sunshines on it that wasn't southwestern looking. I was trying to do a sunny sky, outdoor theme room. We had to settle for kites which was also quite hard to find. I wish there was more out ther in yellow or green. I'm sick of baby blue. I'm also done with seeing bears, dogs, and safari on everything. I'm not interested in sports either.
Good luck!
When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find? Earth tones, oranges, reds, yellows, shabby chic prints.
What were you tired of? Jungle/safari theme, baby blue, pastels, cheesy prints
What colors did you wish was offered? See above. Big fan of earth tones.
What colors did you go with? Navy, mint green, light blue, and brown.
OK, my boy is still cooking, but we do have the nursery almost done. :-)
When looking at nursery prints, What were you hoping to find? Forest and forest animals (trees, leaves, greens/light browns, foxes, raccoons, deer, bears)- cute animals vs hunting graphics.
What were you tired of? Jungle, safari, and monkeys (sorry, Misha!); cars, trucks, and tractors; sports
What colors did you wish was offered? I had a little trouble finding nice fabrics in boyish colors and prints for diaper change pad covers and crib sheets. So many options are girly or got really bad reviews, stating they don't fit well.
What colors did you go with? light sage green, light brown, white
ETA:
I also agree with this for items like curtains, diaper pad covers, and extra crib sheets. I don't like everything to be 100% matchy. Even though I wanted characters on some of the bedding, I went with solids on most everything else.Photo by J Shelton Photography
