Re: ~*~DE/DEmbryo/GC Check-in~*~
Congrats ichoosehope!
Update: Finally have my calendar. ER around 4/28.
QOTW: We did 2 clomid IUI's, and 3 IVF's, one of which was converted to an IUI before we decided to move to DE. I really wanted to get to two transfers with my OE before giving up on them. At that point, we were ready to move on, mainly because we were so tired of the disappointment. Of course, the joke was on us, when our first DE cycle was pretty much like my OE cycles and didn't work. Oh well. We will try again soon.
ETA: For anyone looking for a guarantee program, RBA in Atlanta now has a program very similar to Shady Grove's for $35,000. It is more expensive than SG, but I would think using a frozen egg bank would involve much less hassle. RBA's success rates are also higher. Always good to have more options out there.
Holly - I'm so happy that you are on to the next cycle - I will be thinking good thoughts for you.
Update: Had my last RE appt today, babies look great and are measuring the same size and a few days ahead. NT scan is next week
QOTD: I think I'm in the minority here but we only did 1 IVF prior to moving to DE. We retrieved 16 embies and only 6 fertilized, we did CGH on all 6 and they all had missing or extra chromosomes. My RE was willing to try again but I was running out of money and honestly having a baby was more important to me than having a biological baby.
Update: Still trying to choose a clinic-- we are in WI, so ANY RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD BE HELPFUL. We are seriously considering Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago in Guernee, IL...
QOTW: Tried on our own for 8 months (I'm now 41, so tick tick). Did 3 rounds of Letrozol with a RE-- got pregnant 2/3 times, but lost both babies. Our RE then suddenly died so we tried 3 more rounds of his protocol with our local OB/GYN-- nothing. We then went to another RE in another city and did 2 medicated (injectibles) B2B IUI's-- nothing. Given that I will be 42 in May, and I am also tired of disappontments, we decided to move on...
I am in Chicago so I did a lot of research into clinics in the midwest. Advanced Fertility has the best stats for DE cycles around here. We went with a different clinic because I wanted a guarantee program, but had we not wanted a guarantee plan, Advanced Fertility would have been my first choice. Mamabear used them for her DE cycle and is pregnant with twins.
Congrats ichoosehope! Good luck Holly on your next cycle!
Update: I'm still in the testing process to find out what's going on in my ute. MRI confirmed minimal adenomyosis, which is very good news because (hopefully) I can still carry a baby. HSG looked pretty good; but SHG revealed something intruding into the cavity which could be a polyp, or the fibroid (which is in itself not a problem) could be pushing things in. So next up is a hysteroscopy - if it's a polyp it will be removed. If it's caused by the fibroid, I will have to have surgery to remove that, which will delay things for a while so I really, really hope it's a polyp. We also ironically were just offered a donor, but we turned her down because she had a high BMI.
QOTD: I probably tried more than most with my OE especially given how poorly I responded. I had 3 retrievals and 2 transfers, plus a conversion to IUI and several cancelled cycles. I did get pg on my first IVF, so I'm sure that made me feel like it could happen again - had I not gotten pg, I might have given up sooner. But finally I was like, enough is enough, I just want to have a baby. A little time off from treatments and a great vacation helped me gain a little perspective and become ok with using DE.
Early loss 10/08
Lap 1/09
IVF #1 "natural IVF" - 1 egg retrieved, missed m/c
Tried several mini-stim cycles with no response
Switched clinics - dx'd as carrier for Fragile X
IVF #2 MDL protocol Jan/Feb converted to IUI, BFN
IVF #2 take 2: Antagonist, one embie, BFN
IVF #3: Antagonist, no fertilization
One last ditch effort at OE IVF (antagonist with Clomid) cancelled
DE cycle #1 Jan/Feb 2011, BFP, ectopic
DE cycle #2 June/July 2011 - BFP
10/28/11 Baby girl lost at 17 weeks due to pre-term labor. We love and miss you.
DE cycle #3 June/July 2012 - BFP, twins, both heartbeats stopped, D&C
2 frosties but don't know what's next
FET Dec 2012: BFP! Praying this one sticks for the long haul!
Congrats SVP!! I can't believe you've had your girls already!!
Congrats ichoosehope!! fingers crossed for a successful and uneventful pg!!
GL to all you girls going thru the cycle!! hope it all works out well!!
I can't believe so many of you got pg while I was away!! I have kept all of you in my prayers and am soooo happy for you pg girls!!
UPDATE: Recently, my husband's 14 year-old half-sister had a pg scare so for about a week we thought we would adopt that baby but it ended up being a false alarm ... we're still conflicted on whether we want to do a DE cycle again (if we do tho, it would DEFINITELY be overseas ... way too expensive the first time around) or adopt ... but while we are in limbo, I saw this article on a DHEA study and it's made me consider something I never considered before: trying on our own ... So I've applied and am currently waiting on a response ...
QOTD: Never did try with my OE ... all the docs I have ever gone to told me it was impossible ...
Congrats ichoosehope! Also congrats to svp1537 on your baby girls!
Status Update: Well, we are just 1 1/2 weeks away from transfer and I'm starting to go crazy. Today was another blood draw to check for estrogen and my clinic only calls if something needs to change. I'm just hoping my levels are doing great. I go back next Monday for lining check and another blood draw, then on Tuesday we'll start PIO, and Friday is transfer day. I don't know if it is a good thing or bad thing that next week I'm off for work...I might just drive myself batty until Friday gets here!
QOTW: How far did you go with treatments with your own eggs before making the transition to DE/DEmbryo? What made you decide to move on from using your own eggs? We did 3 IUI's, 2 IVF's, one FET, and used my cousin as our surrogate with IVF #3 before we knew it was time to move away from our embryo's. After getting only five mature eggs from 15 follicles, we just knew something was not right. Additionally, our embryo's, which have been blasts, do not seem to make it beyond the point when they break out of their shell. We decided our next move, after IVF #3, would be donor embryo's or domestic adoption.3 IUI's, 2 IVF's , 1 FET , 1 IVF w/ Gestational Carrier, and 1 FET using adopted embryo's = ALL BFNs
We are adopting!
SAIF/PAIF IS ALWAYS WELCOMED TO POST IN MY POSTS!!!
Welcome back, vawad82! We missed you! I wish you all the best moving forward!
Update: Nothing much, just anxiously awaiting our u/s on 4/19. I'm trying to stay active (with mixed success).
QOTW: Once I realized the severity of my egg quality/quantity problems (this was through my own research based on my test results and not through my incompetent RE), we decided to pursue IVF with my OE at CCRM to give us the best chances of success. Our cycle there (MDL protocol) was pretty bad - 6 mature eggs retrieved, but only 1 fertilized normally on day 1. 2 others fertilized later, but the quality was poor. We transferred 3 embryos on day 3, but it was a BFN.
After that we cycled at at another clinic closer to home (EPP with human growth hormone added). My monitoring appointments showed a poor response, so we decided to cancel that cycle and use the money toward DE. We just felt that we had gone to good clinics and had given my eggs a good chance, but it just didn't seem like it was going to happen. We felt ready to move on to DE.
IVF#1 Oct 2009 (CCRM) - BFN
IVF#2 March 2010 - Poor response/cancelled
DE IVF#1 Aug 2010 - BFN
DE IVF#2 Dec 2010 - Transferred 1, 2 frozen - BFP!
TTC#2 FET Jan 2013 - Transferred 1 - BFP!
There is so much to consider when you are looking at clinics for DE. It is a difficult decision! A couple of things -
Are you willing to travel for DE? (and if so, how far?) Of course travelling adds to the hassle and expense of cycling, but it also makes so many more options available to you. After doing some research, we decided that it was worth it to travel from Kansas City where we live to the East Coast to get into a guarantee (Shared Risk) program that was a good fit for us. The travel really ended up not being a big deal in the grand scheme of things, although it is somewhat taxing to start over with a new clinic, get to know how they do things, etc.
Do you want to use an agency donor or go to a clinic that has an in-house donor pool? Clinics that have their own donor pools seem to be more affordable because all of the screening and legal arrangements have already been taken care of. Donor agencies are helpful if you are set on going to a clinic that does not have their own pool or if you have a specific ethnicity or other quality that may be difficult to find in a clinic pool.
Are you willing to pay more upfront to get into a Shared Risk program where you get a set number of cycles for a given price but will get some or all of your money back if you do not have success or if you choose to get out of the program? For us, with the ridiculous amount of money involved in DE, we just couldn't stand the thought of paying cycle by cycle. Emotionally, I think it would have been too much, so we chose to pay a larger amount to get into the Shared Risk program at Shady Grove where you get 6 cycles for one price (the price depends on how many other couples you are sharing the eggs from a DE cycle with) and you can get out whenever you want and get your full investment back.
Like Holly mentioned, RBA in Atlanta also has a good Shared Risk program. Some clinics do Shared Risk programs with fresh cycles and some with frozen eggs. It's my understanding that you can't have any significant MFI issues to quality for most of the frozen egg programs.
Are you willing to do a split cycle where you would share eggs with one or more other couples? Many programs offer this option, which makes the costs considerably lower and typically pretty much keeps up with the success rates of traditional DE cycles. In split cycles, you would get either 1/2 or a 1/3 of the mature eggs from the cycle depending on what type of program you are in. They usually have a guarantee of how many mature eggs you get for it to count as a cycle. In split cycles, your chances of having frozen embryos is lower, and if you do get frozens, it is likely to be fewer than in a traditional cycle. The cancellation rates are also higher in split cycle situations since the donor may produce enough eggs for one couple but not more.
How important are success rates to you? Some of the clinics with the best DE reputations/success rates are CCRM (https://www.colocrm.com/Home.aspx), SDFC (https://www.sdfertility.com/eggdonor_program.htm), and ORM (https://www.oregonreproductivemedicine.com/donor-egg-program). However, these programs also tend to be more expensive and may not have the financial options available at other clinics. That said, you would have a higher chance of finding success on the first try, which is worth a lot in and of itself.
I wish you all the best in choosing a clinic!

Congratulations to svp1537~ Your girls are beautiful and I am thrilled for you that everyone is home and together!
Welcome to jacksmom07 ~ I wish you tons of luck on our journey and you have found a great place. The ladies here are wonderful.
(((HUGS))) to snoangel79 ~ Congrats on finding your donor...good luck!
Update: Beta #1 was yesterday. It came back at 1242, so we were thrilled with that news. Beta#2 is tomorrow, so of course we are nervously anticipating those results. We are closer than we have ever been, but realize that we still have a LONG way to go.
QOTD: We attempted IVF 3 times before finding a donor. The first two IVF cycles were cancelled due to my poor response and 1 egg was retrieved during the third IVF cycle (which was BY FAR my best responding cycle). We went into our WTF for IVF #3 planning to talk about what to change for IVF #4 and walked out with receipent folders for our first DE cycle. Our RE gave us a less than 5% chance of having a take home baby with OE and really, I was so over all the hurt and disappointment. In the end genetics just didn't matter that much anymore, but the experience of pregnancy did....so we moved on to DE. It was a VERY difficult decision that I really didn't feel at peace with until we found our donor. I know that she was meant for us and, that with her help, we are going to have the babies we were meant to have.
DE IVF #1= 04/11 - BFP
I had my 12 and 16 week appts, and all was well. My 20 week (actually I'll be 21w) which the OB's staff calls the "big appointment" is on April 14th. They'll do the anatomy scan that day.
Congratulations on your girls svp1537! Congrats ichoosehope!
Update: So we have made the decision to move onto DE's! Now we have to decide between Shady Grove, RBA, and CNY. I am actually relieved tofinally have a choice. SO if you can chime in on any of these clinics please let me know.
QOTD: We did 3IUI's with clomid. 3 IVF's and 1 IVM. They were all not promising and I would rather not run out of money trying for a very long shot. I would rather put it toward DE. We have really been through the ringer and have really just hit an IF wall and want to have better chances.
Hi there, hope it is ok that I am lurking here. Wow, the fact that we are thinking of DE is one thing but actually looking and/or posting on this board actually is turning my tummy in knots. I am just looking to see what info is on the check in. I am in Northern Ca in SF Bay area. I am currently on a break due to cysts. Also I am in process of bloodwork, DR appts and thinking about IVF with my OE or DE or what will come next. All depends on bloodwork results I guess. My husband of course is fine with DE, he did not seem to question it. (figures) I am having a hard time thinking about it. (There go more knots in my belly) I guess I have to at least try with my OE and go from there.
I have a question for all of you. I feel like a dummy asking and I will talk to RE about it. So it sounds like there are all sorts of locations to find DE's besides just the office I go to. How does this work? I research them, see what is out there? I am reading that you guys are doing research on these locations and some have better success than other places and I am getting overwhelmed in all of this. Obviously I have not looked into it at all yet, this is the very first I have asked anything. (except a little bit of talk to RE, very little) Is anyone in Northern CA? Any advice on how to find out more about DE and where to get them besides the small little amount on the office site?
I hope it is ok I ask and posted here. I am sorry if I should not be here. Feel free to answer or email me or whatever. I am not on the IF board all the time, I try to check it daily.

Thanks!!! Kristin
So, this was a decision we had to make too.... CNY was never a choice for me but I thought about RBA. When we made our decision, RBA had a huge frozen egg bank but they didn't have a shared-risk/money back program that I was looking for. They now have this program and I think we probably would have done that since I really liked their frozen egg bank selection much better than Shady Grove. We decided to go with Shady Grove because of their money-back/shared-risk program. Frozen vs Fresh didn't matter to me, I just didn't want to waste anymore money. I am also local to SG, so it's kind of convenient to us. It's about a 2 hrs drive but do-able. We had started there with our OE, so we already knew the nurses, doctors, etc and how the clinic worked.
I guess factors for you, is travel and airfare prices to these places...
I would also meet with all the clinics and see what they have to offer. It can't hurt and probably worth your time.

I think you know I used RBA. I did their base program which was $16,500 but they do guarantee at least 2 grade A embies or your next cycle is free. Since I've had children my RE and I both agreed that that my uterus wasn't the problem so I felt comfortable that good quality eggs would work. I also really liked that their was no waiting to be matched with a donor and then sync cycles.
