Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Probably a Q for Canadian Moms...or anyone who was on mat leave

Did any of you consider going back or go back to work early?

I'm off for one year from the week before DS was born. My latest return to work date is August 15.

I'm considering going back early. I always kept this in the back of my mind in case financially it was tight (with me at 55% of my income). Funnily enough, we're managing just fine money-wise (which also presents the question of what I was doing with all our money BEFORE)!, but I'm missing the office. And not being happy where we're living, I figured maybe getting out of here during the day will help.

my mom and MIL are doing daycare for us, so DS wouldn't be with anyone he didn't know, but I'm torn. I just don't want to make the decision hastily and come summer when the weather is nice, regret having to truck into the office everyday...

If you went back early, how was it for you and do you regret the decision?

  • I personally didn't go back early but a woman I work with came back early and ended up regretting it big time a few months later.

  • Would you be able to return to work part-time, then go to full-time Aug 15?  If that's feasible, you'd be able to have office time but also enjoy the summer with LO.

Yeah...that's exactly what I'm thinking will happen...

I could see regretting going back early if you returned when your baby was still itty bitty.

But, I personally don't see any harm in going back early now.

I took 7 months off (2 weeks before I had Kate and then returned when she was 6.5 months) and I think it was  a great time to come back.  I know that I needed to recharge and challenge myself outside of just being a mom.

I think if I was still home right now (I am part time so I am home 4 days a week) I would be getting to the point of feeling restless and not totally fulfilled.  Don't get me wrong, I love my time with Kate.  But, I also love feeling intelligent and being challenged mentally.  My last few weeks at home had me feeling like I was losing my ?edge? and that I was getting dumber by the second.  Work gives me that extra challenge that my mind craves.

    Good luck deciding!

This is soooo me as well. I literally feel like my brain cells are dying by the minute. I need to use my brain for something other than changing poopy diapers and singing "The Wheels on the Bus" ya know?

Thanks for your input; I appreciate it.

  • Can you go part-time?  I've been working 2 days per week since DS was 4 months old and it so helped to keep me sane.  If part-time is a possibility than I would say go for it!

  • Is part-time an option?  You could try it out and if things are going well switch to full-time.
