dd2 has tort.

I knew she was 'getting' it.  If thats even the correct term.  I made SO sure that from day 1 when we placed her down I rotated side to side.  Turned her head to the left one time and to the right the next.  This was working well until about 2 weeks ago she quit turning to her left.  And I could tell she had resistance when I tried to turn her head.

Looks like now I will have 2 kids in PT.  Hopefully it won't be as hard to 'fix' since she's a month old.  Peyton started PT at 2.  However, a little piece of me is freaking out.  Since, tort is either neurological or positional (can it be caused by other things too?).  She wasn't cramped inside of me..especially since she was early, I guess it could be caused BY her being early.  I'm just really hoping it's not neurological and we are starting down the same road again.

It was the first thing really 'off' with Peyton's muscles..then after a few months in PT the $hit hit the fan.

Re: dd2 has tort.

  • I had never heard of tort being neurological before. DS had it, and does have neuro issues (epilepsy and hypotonia). But I hear about sooo many people who had it and have no other issues and do fine. I understand exactly why you are freaked out, though. It's a little too familiar to what you have already been through.

I truly believe DS' tort was from being cramped inside me, and he was 5 weeks early. He just stayed in the same general position too long and the muscle developed  shorter than the other side.

I also know what you mean about feeling like PT was the precipitating event for all the other issues. We went thinking it was for tort and here they were telling us he needed a helmet and was waaay behind with tone. But, if your DD2 has not been told she has other tone issues, try not to worry. I know, easier said than done.

Hang in there. Saying a prayer for you and your family! :)

  • I don't know a whole lot about tort, but I can tell you I have a friend with a lovely little girl who was pretty darn small at 38 weeks when she was born, and she had pretty bad tort.  She's 18 months now and doing great; no indication of anything neurological.  So it's not always a sign of anything bad, I think that positional tort can arise even when LO isn't cramped, as long as they stay in the same spot in the womb.

    Good luck!
