Where are the car seat guru's? Need some help.

I had always planned on extended rear facing with E. He outgrew his infant seat at 2.5 months so we bought the Britax Boulevard CS thinking it would be the only seat we would need until he moved to a high back booster.

Well, he's 11 mos now & 33 lbs.  The Boulevard only rear faces to 35 lbs.  At the rate he's going he will easily be 35 lbs by his 1st birthday. I am not ready to turn him forward facing yet.  Do I have any options?  Which seat has the highest rear facing weight/height limit?  I thought I read somewhere that there is one that rear faces to 45 lbs.  Can anyone tell me what seat that is?

I realize that once he hits 35 lbs he is technically safe to be forward facing in his seat based on weight, but I still don't feel comfortable with that.

  • The Graco MyRide has a higher RF limit.  I believe there is at least one other seat out there that does as well, but we haven't researched for awhile so hopefully someone else knows what it is.

  • I have the Graco MyRide, and it RFs until 45lbs.

I just wonder what the car seat manufacturers are going to do with the new AAP recommendations.

  • The My Ride only RF to 40 lbs.   You're looking for the Sunshine Kid's Radian XTSL to RF to 45lbs.

ETA:  The new AAP guidelines are now RF to 2 if possible under the height/weight constraints of your RF car seat.

  • We have the Sunshine Kids Radian XTSL, which rear faces to 45 lbs. The 65SL version only rear faces to 40 lbs.

There's a coupon code listed on that page that gives you 20% off.

Kohls also carries the seat, so if you have a Kohls card and can find a 30% off coupon, you may be able to get a better deal. We tried to time the 30% off coupon with a time you could earn Kohls cash, but we couldn't get them to line up right.

  • The sunshine kids radian xt will RF to 45 lbs and will also accomodate a taller child. My first outgrew RF by one, and of course the higher weight/height seats didn't come out until he was past those weight limits. Had the XT been out when he was younger, he could have definitely RF until almost 4 weight wise, but more like 3 height wise.

He would not be safe FF at 35 lbs because he still has the bone structure of a one year old.

    This was my exact concern.

Thanks so much ladies!  I'm off to order a Sunshine Kids Radian.  I really wish I had considered the RF weight limit prior to buying my seat.  I just never thought he'd be almost 35 lbs at almost a year old.

This is what I thought as well. I read that until they're about four (regardless of height/weight), the bone development wasn't there to truly be "safe."

  • DD has the Sunshine Kids Radian XTSL that other posters have mentioned.  Some people have a hard time getting it to fit properly in their car.  It has a high back.  If you have a compact car, it might be a tight fit with your driver or passenger seat. It is not a problem in our crossover.  It is a great carseat and we hope to keep DD RFing for a long time in it!
