Trying to Get Pregnant

Photographer in delivery room

A friend of mine delivered a beautiful baby boy last week, and today, i noticed she had photos, on facebook, of the delivery. They werent graphic in any way. In fact, they are quite beautiful. This got me thinking about how neat that is that she has photos of the experience. On the other hand- freakin weird to have some person takin pictures of your business being torn up.

On that same train of thought, I think I would prefer photos over video, because really, who watches videos. They collect dust.

so, where do you stand on photos, or videos,  of the delivery?

Re: Photographer in delivery room

  • I want photos. I was thinking of this yesterday actually while I was watching one born every minute. I didn't think about a photographer though, not sure I would like that. DH isn't into taking pictures like I am (i take my camera everywhere lol) So I'm not sure who would be taking pictures? Maybe DH's sister in law, but I don't really think I want her in there at that moment Tongue Tied

  • I definitely want photos. I'm a scrapbooker so it is important to me to have photos to put into a book for my kids. Just not any graphic pics. I won't want to see my lady bits torn to pieces, so I'm pretty sure no one else will either!...heheheh I'm still trying to figure out who I want in the delivery room with me. Just DH, or do I want my Mom in there too. But those would be the only 2 people in there. I certainly don't want my FIL or MIL looking into my vag-abyss going "yep looks good!"....I don't think so. Smile

  • Def not a video. I don't think I would want a photographer either. I am anticipating it being pretty ugly. haha

  • I've been researching a birth center as opposed to a hospital for when my time comes, and they work with a photographer who takes absolutely beautiful photos of the labor and delivery.  But if I were delivering in a hospital, I'm not sure I'd want the photographer.  Something about the birth center environment lends something more photogenic to the experience though.

And I would be *very* unlikely to actually share those photos on Facebook--eek!  Maybe the family friendly G rated photos only.

  • My friend also had that done, and when she first told me that she was going to have a photographer in the room- I thought it was super weird.  THEN I saw her amazing pictures. I think that I want one now?. They were the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen!

  • I am actually a part-time photographer so I absolutely love the idea of having photographs. However DH and I have always said we just wanted it to be us in the room to live such an intimate emotional moment just between the two of us.

I doubted I'd hire a photographer though.. I'd probably bring my DLSR and have a nurse take some snap shots :)

  • I am fine with photos, but I do not want some stranger in there taking my photo.  DH is the only one I would allow in the delivery room, so he will take the pictures.

The hospital where I delivered DD has a strict no-video policy, and even if they didn't, I wouldn't want the delivery videotaped.

  • I have given this a lot of thought and decided against it. I don't want to have another body in the room. If DH or MIL wants to take pics I guess they can, but there will be strict parameters they need to abide by!
  • My mom was in the delivery room when I had DD. I was too focused on pushing out a baby so I wasn't really thinking of photos - luckily, my mom was!

I have great photos of the delivery. I love that my mom was able to capture such an intimate moment....I love that she caught the look on mine and DH's face as the nurse laid DD on my chest. I love the action shot of me reaching my arms up to grab her. One of my most favourite pics is of DD laying on my chest and DH leaning in to give me a kiss while we both have our hands on DD - a totally unscripted action shot that was just taken in the heat of the moment.

I think people expect that they will remember their delivery better than they actually do....it's such a crazy mix of emotions and you are so exhausted by the time the baby is delivered that your memory is just foggy. I love that I have pictures to remind me about the events of that day. I will definitely be taking pictures during my next delivery.

  • I had an unplanned c-section and my doula took pictures in the OR.  They are pictures of us going in for the c-section, holding our baby for the first time, etc--not graphic photos of the surgery.  I cannot express how much I cherish those photos to this day.  Like pp said, a lot of the moments right after birth are a blur, so it's nice to be able to look back at pictures later.

I wish so much that I had a video of them handing me DD.  We (and by that I mean DH) only took a few photos afterward.  Next time I definitely want more.  I'm not sure I'd want a photographer, but I would consider asking my SIL who takes great photos (and was actually our wedding photographer).

  • Recently, I've actually been thinking about having a photographer in the delivery room with us. However, it would not be some random guy I hire like for a birthday party or wedding. A friend of mine is a professional photographer and I've been thinking about the idea of having her there to take photos so DH doesn't have to worry about it. But it's all still just an idea. DH isn't too bad with pictures either, so I know we can get some good photos if we choose not to have her there in the room while I deliver. I also think we will have a video camera. I'd think I'd like to see what it was like, but these all all just ideas stills. I'm so far away from that, I try not to think of these things often.
  • I wouldn't hire a photographer but I would love pictures.  When my sisters delivered, I was the one taking pictures . I was able to capture some amazing shots, yes some were a little graphic but my sisters love that they have them.

Now I live in a different state and they probably won't be able to make it for the delivery.  DH may have to figure out a way to keep me calm and get some good shots.

  • hmmm.. I have not thought about this and it's funny because I am a photographer!!  It's obviously an extremely intimate occasion, but I think if you were to go pro, you'd need to find someone open minded, creative, great at capturing emotion & someone who will really stay in the background... the last thing you want is an obnoxious photographer with a camera right in your face!! (or other places!)

I have never done a shoot like this.. but I would and I would not feel uncomfortable at all... I would hope that I would keep myself on the "down low" enough to not even be noticed... I don't want to sound like I have a gender bias.. but for this sort of thing.. I would also definitely hire a woman photographer.. no offense to the men photogs out there!

  • My boss and his wife had pictures taken, but nothing that showed her down there.  And, it was her best friend taking the pictures and they turned out absolutly amazing.  She made a slideshow for them with a song and it brought me to tears!  I want my DH and mom with me in the room, but would proabbly just have my mom take pictures.  We will see when the time comes I suppose!  I would not be opposed to having a photographer in the room, but I am pretty sure DH would not want that.
  • I wouldn't hire a photographer myself, but on cue from my doctor, my husband was allowed to peek over the curtain during my c-section and got some AMAZING photos of my daughter being lifted out of me, in rapid succession.  You cannot see anything graphic. I LoVE the pics.

No videos of the delivery for me and if I have to have a section again, I hope he will be able to do the same, and if I am able to do a VBAC, I hope we can figure a way to do pictures without all the graphic stuff. Stick out tongue

There would be NO videos though.

  • We had a ton of people in the room.  Not family or friends but we had 3 resident doctors, the head doctor, and 3 nurses when my DD was crowning.  They asked if it was okay and after 30 hours of labor you really don't care about modesty so I said okay.  One of the resident nurses grabbed the camera (well asked for the camera from my DH) and took a bunch of pictures of us after they put my DD on my chest.  I love those pictures!  I will definitely ask a nurse to do the same for the next kid.

I wouldn't mind having a professional photographer but we just can't afford it.  We will be hiring one for newborn pictures again.

  • I have thought about having a professional photographer in the delivery room. One of my sisters best friends is a photographer and she would be the only person I would be comfortable with taking tasteful pictures of labor & delivery & Immediately after birth. I have no interest in a video. In fact a video camera will NOT be in the room with my legs spread wide eagle!

  • We will have a photographer in the delivery room, I've already talked to a photographer about it. Unlike what many people on this thread said, it is one of the most beautiful forms of photography. Usually people are not nearly as "sweaty and gross" as they think they will be. Besides, the photographer can stay behind your head the entire time, if that's what you wish for. I've personally never even seen the crotch or taken any photo that I wouldn't feel comfortable sharing to friends/family.

You guys should check out https://birthphotographers.com/ to find a photographer in your area.

  • I would like a picture of DH catching the baby (he's a doctor, so he'll be delivering) taken from an angle that shows him and the baby but not my vagina... because really, I don't ever want there to be any pictures of my vagina on camera. And I'd like a picture of the baby being laid on my chest. I think for those two pictures, I'd have a friend or my mom do it. I really don't want a random person in the room taking pictures, even if they are an excellent photographer.

Definitely no video. When I was little, my friend's dad videotaped her mom giving birth to their youngest child, and they had my family over to watch it. They didn't show the actual birth, they just showed her in labor and then holding the baby afterwards, and the whole time, I thought, "Why on earth would anyone allow themselves to be videotaped like this???" It was kind of horrifying.

  • I never thought about it.  I would like photo's of right after the birth not during but I'm not sure who would take them.  DH is fighting me about even being in there with me.  I'm not really close enough with anyone else to have the in there with me.  I would not want a stranger taking them.  Something to think about.

  • Personally I think it all depends on who you have available to take pictures for you. I would love to have pictures of our child's first moments, but I wouldn't want DH to be distracted from what was happening by trying to capture it on film. I wouldn't want someone who was going to take pics indiscriminately or take bad pics. And I wouldn't want a complete stranger in the room just so I could have pictures. And definitely no video--if DH insists that he wants it, then I'm hiding the batteries until the baby is out!

I had the privilege of being in charge of photos when my sister had her son in December--and by that I mean that the camera was handed to me as she was pushing and I was told to be discrete--no lady bits showing. I was able to take some great shots from my position by her shoulder of my nephew as soon as he was born and as he was laying on her chest. It was a great experience for me--apart from the minute of panic when I realized the camera's memory card was full and I needed to delete pics from the camera at lightning speed to capture the little guy's birth--and I know my sis and her BF really appreciate having the pictures.

  • I didn't have anyone in the room but DH with DS being born, so not too many photos.  I didn't want any that were of him being born or anything yucky! (lol).  But if we get lucky enough to have LO#2 I would be temped to have my best friend in the room just to take some more photos.  DH wan't the best at taking them so we have so few of DS.  I would love to have some of the 3 of us and have none.  So it is a great idea!
