Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What have your pedis said about real food?

6mo appt pedi said anything BUT honey and peanut butter. But last appt-4mo she said no dairy for a year. So... I've read that cottage cheese is ok as well as yogurt. So just curious what your drs have said.

  • My pedi hasn't specified what not to give her, but I've been giving her baby yogurt since she turned 6 months, and she's been doing great with it!  It's her favorite solid food.

  • My pedi said no berries or nuts. R has been eating strawberries since he started stage 2 foods and had a whole strawberry the day before he went to the Dr.

  • No honey, no peanut butter, and no milk.

But dairy is fine; yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, etc.

  • I think by dairy, she means milk for the most part. There is nothing specifically 'wrong' with dairy for babies; it just shouldn't be replacing breast milk or formula. Yogurt and cottage cheese..and cheese in general, is just fine. Just don't overdo it and try to replace a liquid meal with it.

  • Our pedi said no honey, nuts, berries, eggs, or dairy until he is a year old.  I specifically asked about the baby yogurt and cheese and she said it was better to stay away from it.  The honey for botulism and the others because kids are more likely to build up an intolerance if they are exposed to them too early.  The dairy one wasn't as major as the others, but she says it is just safer to not give it to them.  But I know my pedi tends to be really cautious about those things.

  • Mine added citrus to the mix.  To this day, my 18-month old still gets wicked diaper rash if he has too much orange.  Too much acid.  And yet even after I tell the inlaws, guess what they feed him when they babysit.  FIL - oh he's fine.  No diaper rash.  Yeah it'll happen tomorrow when you aren't here.  grrrr.

This is exactly what we were told as well.

  • Those are the two nos we got too. Processed dairy like yogurt and cheese is fine.

  • Our pedi said, before 1yr, no - shellfish, milk, nuts, raw strawberries, honey, egg whites.

We were OK'd yogurt at 6mos.

  • My Pedi said no meat, peanuts or egg until 9 months. He said there is an increase in asthma and allergies if given early. Told us to up the protein rich veggies like avocado, beans and peas. Just fine with me. I gag at the smell of the meat in a jar.
