G tube ladies

At what point did you decide to go ahead and get the tube? Our dd takes the bottle, just not very well. Right now feeding is the only thing keeping us in the hospital. We are ibviously going to give her time, but I was curious how long others waited. Thanks!

Re: G tube ladies

  • LA completely failed a swallow study and it was not safe for her to take anything orally.  So, the decision was easy.  G-tube=healthy child!

  • Have they started talking Gtube? Is she making progress at all?

Ben had an NG tube for a few weeks before he fed well as an infant. It did take a few weeks for him to get the hang of it and be able to do it consistently.

He has much other stuff going on, and he needed the NG tube again at 19months and when it was clear he needed  the tube, the GI drs thought it was best to move to the Gtube since it is likely to be long term. He got the Gtube at 2 1/2.

Can she swallow? Did you get a diagnosis?

  • She is making some progress. She takes about 10 cc then starts coughing. She seems to suck just not swallow. It's frustrating! We still don't have a diagnosis so that is not helping the situation.

Has she had a swallow study done?  Coughing is a sign of aspiration and could be caused by poor oral motor control, cleft larynx, neurological issues etc.

  • Reid would occasionally do 40 cc's but mostly 10-20.  Since it had been that way for a couple months and it was the only thing keeping him there we had it done.  We've been home just over a month and he still does not do well with a bottle.  We're hoping he eats regular food when the time comes.
  • We are going to do the swallow study next. Feeding is the only thing keePong her here. We know there are other issues but there is nothin hey can do to fix it. I know she would be better at home with us and I would do better with her there too.

  • DS was working on bottle feeding while he had an NG tube in the hospital. He started throwing up a lot and not tolerating his feeds well, even though he could suck, swallow and breathe. We weren't getting very much volume orally or by NG into his stomach. So, they did an upper GI study which showed that he had terrible acid reflux. That is when we decided to put in the G-tube. A few days later they converted to a GJ-tube that feeds into his intestine because he was still throwing up with just the G-tube.

  • We took Lillian home with a NG tube and then 3 months later decided to get the g-tube.  We were willing to do either one to take her home.  Being in the NICU just for feeding troubles didnt sit well with me. We later got a diagnosis, but I was glad we were home where we could hold her and care for her ourselves rather than leave her laying in NICU.
