They said that a kid should be in a booster seat until they're 4'9"! I don't think I was that height until like.. 8th grade? Granted, I'm a shorty (only 5'2"), but can you imagine being a booster seat until then?
Re: new(?) car seat recommendations
DH and I were just having this convo last night...personally, I think I will try to keep my kids in some sort of booster until they are "adult sized" since that is the size that car engineers design the seatbelts and seats in cars. I think in our culture it seems odd to have a young child in a carseat much past the age of 5 but in our countries they do it and they have WAY less fatalities for children in car accidents. Like Sweden. It could also be the cars they drive...Saabs and Volvos, which are known for their safety, but again, I am sure the carseats do have an impact on te outcomes. FWIW, I was 4'9" in 5th grade and 5'8" by 8th grade so for our kids, I am guessing they'll be along the same trajectory. A 10-11 year old in a booster seat does seem reasonable to me.
Even smaller adults probably should have some sort of booster (studies have shown that petite women, for example, suffer worse injuries in car accident because the seatbelts and seats are designed for "average sized" adults).

I actually agree - until I started driving, I used to put the chest strap behind my back when I was in the front seat, if I even used it (pre- seat belt law). Sometimes when I was driving I'd do the same, or put it under my arm, b/c it just cut across my neck. I was so glad when cars came with those adjustable seat belt heights on the side!! But even then, I think they should be lower.
Oh definitely. I always had mine at the lowest setting (when I'm back home or somewhere driving) and sometimes it's still too high.
I'm not disagreeing with their recommendations in any way, shape or form, I just haven't had to think or deal with this yet. I suppose, thinking back to my experiences as a kid (and a short one at that) it's hard for me to imagine being in middle school (or even HS) and using a booster seat - I felt like was tough enough not being the coolest, or the hippest, and whatever else kids go through. Obviously, I'm sure my opinions will change once we need to deal with that -- it'll be more along the lines of "I don't really care if you're cool or not, because you'll still be alive!"
yeah I can totally see how kids would "fight" being put in a booster seat and want to just sit w/o it like a "big kid"
in TX it is law for them to be in a booster until they are 8 yrs old or at least 80 lbs
