*Sigh* Forced to wean - cold turkey!

DD still nurses before bed and when she wakes in the night.

I have been sick for two weeks. I finally went to the Dr today and I have: a sinus infection, bronchitis, bronchitis induced asthma, and double pneumonia. I am on antibiotics, steriod nasal spray, and a puffer. One of the things I am on isn't safe for nursing.....and with all the crap I am taking now, I probably wouldn't anyway (antibiotics and steriods going in to her system? No thank you). But now I have to wean, cold turkey, tonight! Ack. She has gone to bed without nursing - but only if I am not home. It will be interesting to see if she goes down while I am home. And how will I get her to go back to sleep in the night?

  • I am so sorry.  Poor baby and poor you.  Are you ready to end your BFing relationship?  That has to be really hard.

  • I had a horrible bronchial pneumonia also a couple of weeks ago.  I didn't need the steroid, but I was on antibiotics.  My antibiotics were approved for nursing though.  If you aren't ready to wean, there may be an alternative.  Even the cough syrup with Codeine was OK for use while BFing, but that made me really nervous so I would on take it at night after she had gone to bed.

I feel your pain with cold turkey.  I did that with DS, and it was painful. Hopeuflly it goes by quickly.

I wasn't quite ready to have to do it tonight, but I had been planning to for a while now. I had planned that definitely by age 2. She really only nurses for comfort now. I hate to hear her cry.

Oh that sucks :-(  Sorry you're sick, and sorry you have to wean earlier than you thought you would.

If I were you I'd get DH to go in tonight when she wakes, if you think that might work. If you go in it might be like you're rubbing it in her face (literally lol), and could make her more upset. If you have to go in, wear a big sweatshirt and just tell her that boobies are sleeping or all gone or whatever. Do whatever you can to comfort her by hugging or rocking.... It will be hard the first few nights but if you're consistent I'm sure she'll catch on quickly.

    Good luck!

  • to make matters worse, I just recovered from a case of mastitis a couple of weeks before I got sick!

Even with antibiotics that are safe, I am on a steriod puffer, and a steroid nasal spray. With all of that, I feel like it is just too much that could get in to her little body and I don't want to chance it. She has gone to bed without nursing before, but not when I am home. She seems to be ok so far....a little crying. I just hope we can get through the night wakings.
