Another swaddling post (sleeping)

When is it no longer safe to swaddle? LO kicks lots in his sleep, so I often find him unswaddled and just lying on top of the blanket. We don't swaddle him up to his neck because we leave his arms out, so the blanket is more at armpit level.

I'm scared that once he starts rolling over, he'll come unswaddled and then there will be a loose blanket in the crib with him and something bad will happen.

So is that when we should stop swaddling him? When he can roll over?

Just curious what you've done with your LOs. Thanks!

  • Why bother swaddling if you aren't tucking his arms in? I thought the whole purpose of swaddling was to keep lo's arms from waking themselves up. We are still swaddling but we let her feet out so she doesn't come unswaddled.

  • You should stop swaddling once they are rolling over. With DS1, we swaddled til he was about 5 months.

It still calms him, and keeps him warm. He SWIMS in all of the sleepers/sleep sacks we have. They just hang off his shoulders.

Have you found small sleepsacks? There are ones that are quite small for "0-6m".

Also, if you aren't swaddling his arms (which means I wouldnt actually call it swaddling) then I don't think it's a problem to "stop". The problem with swaddling is when your LO can roll over and can't move their arms b/c they're swaddled. So if you aren't swaddling their arms (aka you're not really "swaddling"), there is no problem.

  • We swaddled our son until he was 6-7 months old.  He needed it!  Have you tried the Miracle Blanket?  Your LO shouldn't escape from that.  I'd also swaddle arms in.  Otherwise you aren't doing anything for the startle reflex.
