Weird new habit

Ellie has just started the lovely new habit of sucking on her fingers. She constantly has her fingers in her mouth. For a mom who is majorly germaphobic, this is tough to deal with. But really, I'm just getting concerned about why she's doing it at this age. She never took a pacifier and there haven't been any major changes in her life recently. She does have a little cold. Do you think it could have anything to do with her ears? Or maybe teeth? Or maybe it's just a phase?

Anyone have a preschool age child who started this? What did you do?

Re: Weird new habit

  • Brenna JUST started sucking her fingers, and thumb at times.  She is also twirling her hair over a finger while doing it.  I just decided that I don't want to give it any attention, after discovering that saying something makes the obsession worse.  Hang in there, let it go, and it will go away.  I don't think it is illness related, and just a phase.  Turn a blind eye, and try to give her something fun to do with her hands when you see her doing it.  It will go away.

  • C had her hands in her mouth constantly a couple of months ago.  And pretty much any toy she could fit in there.  I could feel her molars coming in so I think that was it.  After they came in a little bit more, it got better, but she still puts stuff in her mouth a lot.  It grosses me out too.
