I am seriously considering asking my guests to make donations to our NICU in lieu of gifts since I feel like my son already has everything he could ever need. He has so many toys from my nieces. The only things we really need are a toy chest and an extra set of foam tiles for playing on. And possibly toys for boys if they exist at this age. I am really picky with clothes and would prefer to just buy these myself.

Re: What are you telling people to get son for 1st bday?
We are getting Hudson a Swing for our tree in the backyard and a wagon for the zoo.
His godmother asked me last night and I told her a small pool for outside this summer because he doesn't have much as far as outside toys go.
I am also thinking about a turtle sandbox, but I am not sure yet.

I think donations for the NICU is an awesome sentiment to the people that helped him be able to celebrate a first birthday in the first place, but this goes along with a "No gifts please" kind of party, which is a whole different issue.
People would have to receive something specific on where to make donations, so if you don't find it to be tacky, you could advise people who ask you "What does DS want for his birthday?" But, to put it anywhere on the invitation is you assuming that someone would bring gifts.
