Babies: 0 - 3 Months

5 wk old eats every 1.5 - 2 hours around the clock

I am starting to wonder if this is normal... my LO hardly goes 2 hours sometimes between feedings. It is exhausting. We can hardly leave the house before LO has to eat again or else he fusses like crazy. He eats about 3.5 oz each time and never spits up but I can't help wonder if we're not overfeeding him. We've tried diverting his attention to see if he REALLY is hungry but inevitably he starts eating his fist and gets really upset. I feel terrible about this and of course I want to feed the little guy all the time if he really is hungry, but I almost feel like the stretches are getting shorter instead of longer. I am up every 2 hours without fail during the night and keep wondering if somehow I am teaching him to eat so often by responding to him before he goes into an all-out cry, but I do let him fuss a bit and he is only 5 wks old. I am doing 50% BM and 50% lactose sensitive formula (which I've heard is digested quicker than normal formula.. but still). I am a first time mom so I am just curious if anyone else is/has experienced this? We have his 1 month appt. on Friday and I plan on discussing this with her. Thank you!

  • Will he take a pacifier?  I'm all for feeding him if he is hungry, but that does seem excessive for 5 weeks, especially since he is bottle fed and you know how much he is getting.

  • We are going through this as well.

He will maybe nap for 30-45 min during the day, the rest of the time he is on my boob. And we recently got rid of the shield so I feel he is nursing more efficiantly but pretty much ever 2 hours or less even he is screaming and eating his fists. At first we thought it was major gas so we kept trying everything to let it loose. But then I put him on boob hes fine and after hes content until its time to eat again. Also tonight he slept for maybe an hour woke up fussing then flat out screaming bloody murder! LOL

I think its just a growth spurt that they are going through. So I just try to nurse when I see his cues. It sucks going anywhere though because he wil start screaming and if I dont have anything pumped we have to hurry up and get home!

It's exhaugsting, never get anything done around the house it seems.

    I feel ya!

Also, he will sometimes take the paci but will not tak it if he is hungry he will spit it out and chew on fists.

He does seem to sleep longer at night say from arounf 10pm he fell asleep and he will probably wake at 1 since he hasnt yet. Then we will feed and he might sleep another 3 hours... so it just seems like during the day hours my LO does it... :/

  • Also, I know Babywise is controversial, but I swear by the eat, play, sleep routine (as well as making sure LO gets full feedings).  It worked like a charm with my first, and Tate seems to be on the same routine now too.

He will take a pacifier for short periods of time, but we've noticed it never delays his feedings and he will spit it out and chew on fists/get fussy if he wants the real deal!

This was me exactly. I went to a lactation consultant and found that LO has a slight tongue tie that prevented him from getting a full feeding because his tongue got too tired. Have you seen an LC? I highly recommend!

I was so excited about Babywise until I had my LO and realized this is totally impractical for us. He sleeps after a feeding every time regardless of what we do. I've tried wet wash cloths, baths, diaper changes etc. He just screams torture through the whole thing or sleeps through it. I think since he's taking in 3.5 oz each time that he is getting full feedings, though. I wish I knew what Babywise would recommend in this situation!

Well at my pediatritians (its 4am excuse my spelling lol.) the nurse we see is also the breastfeeding lady I am not sure if she is considered a lc. Do you think he may not be getting *** feedings and thats why he wants it so often?

Maybe I will mention tounge tied at gus next appt. but thats not til April 18th....

  • My LO is 4 weeks old today.  He eats 4oz. every four hours around the clock.  My pedi says that is not too much food.  So, maybe your LO just needs more to eat.
