Pediatrician - How does this work?

Okay,

So I know who my pediatrician will be, I'm going with the Dr. that my niece and nephew see.  He is a great Dr. and I don't feel like I need to search.  Do I need to get in touch with him or wait until after the baby is born.  If I do need to get in touch with him, what do I actually say when I call.  I'm so confused about all of this, as I have no clue what to do.  Thanks a million ladies I appreciate any help!

  • You need to make sure they are in-network for your insurance. You also need to make sure he is taking new patients. Then ask if they have well-baby appointment times when they try to keep the people who are "sick" out of the office. Then find out when the first appointment should be after birth. If they can send you the paperwork ahead of time it will be easier if you already have the filled out when you go the first time. :) Some of it you won't be able to fill out until after to get a social security number and birth certificate. They will let you know if there is anything else you should be aware of.

  • You can call and schedule a prenatal consultation with them, or at the very least find out when they'll want to see your LO for the first time if they don't have rights at your hospital.

Just call and tell them you are due with your first child in June, and you wanted to see what the process is for newborn new patients. They should be able to tell you how they usually do it!

  • Great advice above! You can simply call over there and see if they are taking new patients and inform them of your due date/hosptial, etc. They will likely take the lead from there and let you know what is needed. If they are attending at the hospital where you deliver, one of the docs from that practice will evaluate your baby while in the hospital. If they don't have rights at that hospital, please don't stress. Another pediatrician at the hospital will do all the evaluations while baby is in the hospital.

  • I don't think my hospital will discharge you without showing that you've scheduled your first pediatrician appointment.  And they prefer if your pediatrician discharges the baby after delivery.  There are lots of resources online if you search for questions when interviewing a pediatrician--how are after hours questions handled, are there drop-in appointments if your child is sick, do you always see the same doctor (if there are many in the practice), etc.

Just wanted to add.. your pedi DOES NOT have to be there for discharge. Most likely my pedi will NOT have privileges at my hospital because they are about 1/2 hour from the hospital.  The pedi on call at the hospital will discharge your baby PROVIDED they see you do have an appointment with a pedi lined up.

  • Good call! You finally reminded me and I called insurance to confirm the providers and then called to make the consultation. Thanks for the reminder! My mom has been on me for weeks about this.

  • I called who I was wanting and just asked if they were excepting new patients.  She took it from there asking if I was expecting and all the info they needed.  She called me back let me know I could get in and sceduled a meet the dr. appt a month before the baby is due.  It was really easy.
