2nd Trimester

What do we need to have ready?

We've been put on bedrest at 20 weeks, because of an extremely week cervix.  We went to the hospital on Saturday with contractions and luckily they have stopped.  We are 21 weeks now, and the doctors said she can really come at any time.  We know she'll be in the hospital for some time, but  What do we need to have ready to go?  Opinions please!

Re: What do we need to have ready?

  • A place for baby to sleep, car seat, diapers, wipes, formula and bottles if you are FF'ing, a few onsies/PJ's, a few swaddle blankets, diaper area cream, a mild soap, some moisturizing cream, maybe a pacifier or two and some burp cloths

Newborns need very little for the first few weeks. Extra clothes, toys, play mats and all the other gee wiz baby gear isn't necessary right away. You don't need a changing table, nursery furniture, special pillows to survive. Mothers have had babies for years with very very little. Think minimalist.

     Congrats and good luck!

  • If you are going to nurse, a pump...every preemie mom I've known IRL that has their child in the NICU for a few weeks needed to pump in order to establish their BFing supply.  They brought their milk to the NICU for the baby to have it put in their feeding tube or to bottle feed it.

  • In addition to the carseat, make sure you know how to install it properly ahead of time if possible.

Hoping for the best for you!

  • I was paged to come check out this post. I'm a mom of a preemie due to PTL.

First, stay reassured that your baby will be in for a while. If you were in any major danger for him/her coming early, you'd still be in the hospital. They only let you go home if you're not in any immediate danger. I went in at 29 weeks and I was dilated to a 3 and 70% effaced. I stayed in for 6 days, was discharged, came home, and was back in 24 hours later. I increased to a 4.5 and 80%. I then stayed in for another 2 weeks. DD came after 3 weeks of being put on super strict bedrest at home.

That being said, you won't need a pump. The hospital will provide you with tubing and the pump for as long as your baby is in the NICU. Once your baby goes home, if you still need to pump, your insurance can issue you one to use at no charge.

I would wait to get anything until after your baby shower (Should you be able to go to it. Mine was three days after I went in and it went on without me). If say, you have a micropreemie, you will have plenty of time before your baby comes home to get the necessities. A good rule of thumb is that if you have a preemie, you will likely not bring your baby home until around the due date.

Just worry about what YOU need. I survived off of the internet, the tv remote, magazines, books, and snacks. I was never alone for more than an hour or so in case anything went wrong.

    More than anything, good luck!
