NIFR-Job Question

Hi ladies!

So up until a couple months ago when we moved, I was an attorney. Since then, I have been looking for work as both an attorney and pretty much anything else I have seen.  I have an interview for a job as a customer service rep for a company that has some IF coverage.  Currently we are all OOP.  My thought is that if I can tough it out until benefits kick in and then long enough to do treatments, it would be worth it even though the job pays way less than what I was used to making.  But then part of me thinks that I should hold out for an attorney position (although it has been 5 months and still no luck there.)  I think the fact that I would have a steady income and some IF benefits is good enough, even though everyone else I know will tell me I'm crazy for taking this job.  ("You went to law school, why in the world are you working in a call center?" Uh maybe because the economy sucks.)

Sorry I don't really know what the point of this point is other than to see if anyone thinks that I am crazy for taking this job (assuming the last interview goes well).

Re: NIFR-Job Question

  • I would take it if I were you. If only for the IF benefits! Don't worry about what other people say, you've got to do what works for you.

  • The thing you should think about is, how long are you willing to work in this position.  I totally understand you taking this job if it means you would have a steady income and better benefits.  The only thing is that you don't want to job hop too much and look unreliable on your resume when you are ready to get back to being an attorney.  I've had a rocky employment history since getting laid off in April 2009.  I'm finally back into the type of position I want to be in, but it took awhile to get here.  The recruiters were really reluctant to hire me because they thought my job hopping showed me being unreliable.  I had to explain that I was laid off and took the first job I could get because of the uncertainty in this job market.  Good luck!!

  • I think Ann679 raises some good points.  I would also weigh earning potential as an attorney with no IF benefits versus a lower paying job with benefits -- you might still come out ahead if you can make substantially more as an attorney.

I would also consider if you want to keep working in the law.  As an attorney, I think it would be hard to go back to a traditional practice if the job you are looking at right now has absolutely nothing to do with the law.

A lot of the decision might depend on your student loan situation, too.

Good luck!  I just started a new job after months of less than full time legal employment, so I feel your pain.

  • You can always take this job, while also keeping an eye out for an attorney opening at a law firm, etc,

If an attorney position doesn't show up, you will still be earning something and putting in the time twords your IVF benefits.  You can also then wait until the perfect law position shows up.  You may also be able to squeeze in a cycle while waiting for a great position!!

You don't have to put every position on your resume if you are there for a short time.

    Good luck to you

This! And they could see from your resume or CL that a 5 month gap post-move would be a good reason to look for another job- especially during such a terrible recession where jobs aren't easy to come by, in practically any field.

You can always keep an eye out for a job as an attorney while you work a job with IF benefits IMO.

  • Just keep in mind that the "don't put every job on your resume" idea may backfire if you are required to do a background check for your new position.  I work in the banking industry and have to do a background check with every job.  Not listing it on your resume may look like you are lying.
