"New research indicates that toddlers are more than five timessafer riding rear-facing in a car safety seat upto their second birthday"
ETA: link is fixed. I also added the baby bargains link about it.
Re: AAP officially reccommends rear facing till 2
The link isn't working for some reason, but I was able to find the heading on there ..unfortunately you have to have a subscription to read the article. I'm glad this is official now though, I will send it to my DH to convince him we should wait until 2 to make the switch..he's already on board to go as long as possible till 2, so maybe this will convince him why!
ETA: Here is another link that states the new recommendation, as well as other good car seat info:

"What about concerns for kids being uncomfortable riding rear-facing? Would their feet or legs be injured in a crash? The AAP says this is a common concern, but not supported by any evidence. The benefits of riding rear-facing outweigh concerns about leg injuries."
You should look up the rear facing videos on youtube and show your hubby. It really is ok for their legs to be smooshed a little bit. A broken leg heals far far easier than a broken neck or spine.
My Blog
Ditto! DS is starting to sit more indian-style, and he seems pretty comfortable.
We turned Em at 1, but with the next one, we'll definitely try to keep him/her rear-facing longer. I feel like it'll be much easier now that we have the larger SUV.
I'm sending this info on to DH so he starts getting on board now :-)
My son (now 15...) was tiny - he stayed RF until at least 2 - and in a booster seat beyond 6th grade (he wasn't 4'-9" OR 60 pounds by agge 12!!). He didn't think anything of it. We'll see how big/little this LO is but I plan on using the same judgement as I did back then...I'm glad to see this get some press!
That is great!
I am so glad to hear that I have been a big advocate for keeping them rear facing as long as possiable it is surprising how many people just go by the standard rule and just turn them at age 1
My DD is 3 years old and 4 monthes and is still rear facing and I wanted to turn her at age 2 and the car set inspector told me to keep her Rear facing until she hits 36 lbs she is currently 28 lbs.and her feet are squished but the inspector said it is much better to have a broken leg then a broken neck
