How are you doing with weight gain?

It seems like the bigger I get the more self conscious I am about my weight. I know it's just a number (that nobody knows except me and my doc) but it still kinda bugs me. I didn't start out at the ideal weight so I was hoping not to gain as much but I'm entering my 29th week and I'm already up to 25 pounds. from everything I've read, that's what I'm supposed to gain for the whole pregnancy!

My doctor doesn't have any concerns about my weight, but I do. This is my first pregnancy - is that a normal gain or am I in trouble?? Where is everyone else weighing in right now?

Re: How are you doing with weight gain?

  • i guess i technically haven't gained anything yet

i lost 10lbs from ms, and just today i weight myself and i've officially gained that 10lbs back. but i'm overweight as well, so that's a good thing for me.

with my first two i gained about 30lbs total... with my daughter i gained 60lbs and that was miserable...

you're not in trouble at all if your doctor says you aren't.

Ditto. I lost 15 lbs due to MS, and now I'm back up 15, so a net of 0. I have been bobbing within a pound or two above or below my starting weight for a few weeks now. I am getting a bit concerned about that!

  • I've gained about 16 lbs but was a little underweight to start off with. I think I'm on track for about 25 total, but I honestly wouldn't worry unless your doctor is worried.
  • every women is different and will gain weight differently - one of my friends told me she only gained 17 pounds (8 kilos) her whole pregnancy - i was so embarressed when i said holy hell i gained that mid way through second tri!!

I've now gained about 10 kilos (22 pounds) but about 4 pounds of that would be in my boobs!

I wouldn't be concerned - i was very small pre-preg so i guess this is my bodys way of making sure i'm the right weight to carry baby to term - well thats what i put it down to anyways Stick out tongue

  • So far 15lbs. I started off at a normal weight. Doctor is only concerned because one month I gained 7 and another I gained 5. It's not the total weight but the rapid weight gain. I think this month I have tapered off. Wont know until next week.

  • I've gained 16 pounds.....I seriously thought I'd be one of those people who gained 16 the whole pregnancy.  I work out every day, eat healthier than ever and started out really fit.  It's just the way the cookie crumbles (no pun intended) for some of us.  I just hope that we're able to lose as quickly....don't feel bad at all.

  • I am up 12lbs .

  • I've gained 18lbs from my "low" weight (lost a few in the beginning), or 15lbs from my pre-preg weight.

Like pp said, if your doctor isn't concerned, you don't need to be concerned. Plus, 25 is not a magic number. If you were average weight pre-preg, the recommended weight gain is 25-35. If you gain 1lb per week, you're on track to gain right around 35...even if you go over a few lbs, that's no big deal either, as long as you are healthy.

  • I am up a little more than I'd like to be:  20 lbs at 26 weeks.  I had one awful week (the week of Valentine's Day) when I gained 6 pounds!  I am still kicking myself about that week.  I didn't have much morning sickness at all, so my weight has only gone up since my BFP.

  • I'm with you! I just left my 28 week appointment and I am up 27 pounds. I was at a normal weight pre-pregnancy but lately have been packing on the pounds. This is my first baby as well. My doctor says I am fine and that she will let me know if it gets out of hand...but it still makes me nervous!

  • 14 pounds.  But I was overweight because I hadn't lost all of the weight from my first son.  I am hoping to stay under 30, and if I gain the usual pound per week from here on out I should be fine.  I had gained nearly 35 pounds by this time last time...

  • Guess I'm in the minority with this one... I almost hate to admit it... I'm 29 weeks and already up about 32 pounds.  Most of that has happened in the past 3 months, and I've asked my doctor, but they aren't worried.  I eat pretty well, keep myself at about 2200 calories a day, and try to exercise at least 4 days a week.  I was a healthy weight before getting pregnant, and was VERY active... running, yoga, etc. on top of the fact that I'm a teacher and almost never sit down.  Can't really figure out why it's piling on, but at least it isn't showing much... I have a HUGE belly, but the rest of me is still almost normal sized.  I've always struggled with weight issues, so I totally understand the worry on this issue.

  • 28 weeks 3 days and I'm up 21lbs!!! Talked to my doctor about it today though and she said that I was doing fine. I also started at a pretty "normal" weight, I lost 25lbs before my wedding in November and seeing it all come back is starting to get a little scary

  • I'm up 24 lbs. I had my 28 week appointment today and my OB says I look great and I'm right on track! Hope that makes you feel better :)
  • I'm up 20 pounds.  Ugh.  I gained 35 with my first.

  • I'm up about 20 lbs.  I got pregnant about a month after our wedding so I was in pretty good shape.  For most of the pregnancy I really just felt all belly.  Yesterday however, I put on a pair of my workout capris for the first time since the fall.  They were SO snug around my butt and thighs!!  I burst into tears right away.  It is so hard to take in for the first time!  I'm a runner and have always been in fairly good shape so this is all new to me.  I know its all for the good of our baby but still!!  Hubby told me I was beautiful and I just had a baby in there and I cried "The baby is NOT in my butt!!"  LOL  He also offered to take me shopping (as did my parents who happened to stop by right in the middle of this!).  It was sweet but there was NO way I wanted to shop feeling like I did.  Sorry for the vent...I'm much better today!  I enjoy working out so I know I'll be motivated to lose this lovely weight once we settle into a routine.  (hopefully!!!)  :)

  • I was overweight to beging with. I think I am up about 18 lbs. I will be a little over the recommended 30 lbs, but oh well. Both my mom and my aunt gained 60 lbs with their first, so I will take 35!

  • I'm almost 30 weeks and I've gained 9 lbs. I had gained more but I spent a week in the hospital with the flu and then was on a liquid diet for an additional week because I tore up my esphagus with all the throwing up.

  • As of my last appointment, I'm only up 9 pounds... but the docs aren't harassing me about it yet. I gained about 30 pounds with DS (my first), and my doctor said that was perfect. It just depends on the person. I agree w/ PP's... if your doc isn't concerned, don't worry!

  • Everyone is different and if your doctor is happy, then you should be happy with your weight gain.  I am the opposite...I have only gained 4 pounds - my doctor is fine with it.  I was about 25 pounds overweight when I conceived and the baby is measuring fine.  I hardly have a bump and people cannot believe I am almost 29 weeks.  But like I said if the doctor is not concerned then I am not concerned
  • 28 lbs at 28 weeks.  Everyone gains differently.  If your doc isn't concerned, no need for you to be.

  • I'm up 20lbs but I was less than 100lbs to begin with. I've expressed concerns to my OB but she says it's perfect whatever I'm doing now.

  • I'm up 20 at 26 (almost 27 weeks) and I got reprimanded today by one of the doctors in the practice.  She said the ACOG standards have changed to 25-30 lbs instead of 25-35 lbs... I've decided she's full of crap :)

  • I'm pushing 30lbs of weight gain (at 29 weekss) and my doctor isn't worried at all...I ask him at each visit and he says I'm fine...I had no ms so I have only gained weight....I did have one major spurt in the second trimester of 12lbs in 6 weeks but outside of that 6 week period I gain about  1 to 1.5lbs/week.

What bugs me is my doctor's scale says I weight 7lbs more than the one at home so I always feel fatter when I leave the docs office lol

  • I am 28w4d and have gained 18 pounds.  I work out a lot so if I didn't, I'm sure I would have gained more! I did gain 7 pounds in one month...which was during the holidays! LOL
  • I have gained 16 lbs total and I am in my 27th week.

  • Up 14 lbs so far.

  • I was overweight to begin with, so I needed to not gain as much. I'm up 7 lbs. I'm trying to keep it at the 15-20 lbs
  • I'm up around 18 lbs, but my doctor suggested I try to stick to a 10 or 15 lb gain since I started out overweight. She didn't say anything about me going over already, but I'm a little upset about it.

  • Pushing 30 pounds at 29 weeks!  I was on the thin side of normal to start and very active.  I have pretty much stopped exercising since hitting the 5.5 month mark, other than walking.  My doctor hasn't said anything so far and I feel like I'm eating pretty healthy.
  • I'm up to 30 at 27 weeks, I'm not sure why I've gained so much because I eat very healthy and I walk a lot...oh well the doctor hasn't told me anything yet so I'm not worried

  • I was up 21 pounds at my last appointment (29 weeks).  The doctor said my overall gain is fine, but I put on 8 pounds between appointments and she said that's too much.  It was girl scout cookie season, though, what can I say ;)  Back to eating healthy this month...

I've gained 20 so far...and I was already overweight and still carrying 15 pounds from my first pregnancy, so I feel pretty crappy about it.  Not so crappy that I refrained from making brownies with browned butter last night, though.

  • I'm up about 25 pounds at 29w1d. I was on the thin side of normal to begin with, and have stayed fairly active throughout my pregnancy. I'm eating healthier than ever, so I'm super confused about the weight gain!

  • I've gained 22.5 pounds as of this morning.  I feel really good about that.  I gained 10 in the first trimester eating carbs to ward off nausea and have felt very healthy since then.  Also started out on the slim side and am a bit less active than before.
