BF Mama's :: Bottle Feeding

My daughter is 9wks this week and I exclusively breastfeed so I'm not sure how much my daughter is getting (in ounces) each feeding.  For those of you who are pumping and feeding breast milk, on average how much is your LO eating and how often.  I'm storing milk for when I go back to work and I'm curious to know if i'm on the right track to continue to exclusively BF or if I'm way under where I'll need to consider supplementing with formula....My daugher will be 13wks when I go back to work.  Any info is greatly appreciated!

Re: BF Mama's :: Bottle Feeding

  • When I went back (3 months for DD, close to 4.5 for DS) my kids were taking around 3-4 oz per bottle and using 3 bottles per work day.  They maxed out at 5-6 oz per bottle at around 6 months and stayed there until 1 year....bf babies will never take as much in a bottle as older ff babies will.

  • My guy is 7 weeks, and he's eating 3-4 oz every 3-4 hours. From what I understand, it's pretty rare that they will need more than 5 oz of BM at each feeding as they get older, although I don't have any experience so I could be wrong about that. I think you'd be safe planning on 4 oz for each feeding.

  • I'm going back to work when LO is 6 weeks.  The LC suggested storing milk in 2 oz.  I only pump about 4-6 oz every day.  I have a couple of 4 oz bags, but mostly just 2 oz.

  • My LO is 11wks now and I send 4 packages of milk with him per day -- two 4oz packages and two 3oz packages.  He usually take 3-4oz every 3-4 hours.  I had frozen a few packages with more than 4 oz and it really seems a waste -- we had to break it down into two feeding and that was hard for daycare. To date he has not had more than 4oz in a feeding and now at work even when I have had to suffer through a meeting and I am engorged I get like 5oz, but on a regular basis I get 3-4oz per pump. Hope this makes sense.

  • I pump once or twice a day and get 3-4 oz each time.  Always once, sometimes I get a 2nd one in when DH feeds DS his bottle, but that depends on what I'm in the middle of when he eats.  He will also take 4-6 oz, depending on how hungry he is and he's still on an every 2 hour feeding schedule.

  • On kellymom it says to divide 25 by the # of feedings per day so for me it's btwn 3 and 4 oz.
  • When our little guy has a bottle he's eating about 3.5-4 oz. Every once in awhile he will want another ounce or so about an hour later and then will sleep for a long time (four hours or so).

    I pump and save his milk in 3-4 oz freezer bags. My LO is staying home with hubby though.. so I don't have to worry about daycare regulations and food prep.

     Good luck!

  • My LO is 11 weeks old and eats 4-5 oz of milk every three hours. I sent two bags for my daycare lady to freeze and then I send 3 5oz bottles everyday.
