I had a Dr's appt Thursday March 10th where I was 40w4d where I was 2cm dilated 70% effaced and my OB asked me if I wanted to schedule an induction. I almost cried telling her no and asked her to strip my membranes instead. So she did - and it didn't hurt then I went mall walking with my BFF for an hour. 3:30am Friday morning (12 hours after appt) on my birthday I woke up from a contraction. I thought it was a little weird cause I hadn't really had any contractions during my pregnancy. I decided to try and go back to sleep because if it was early labor I better rest up. Well the contractions kept coming and were uncomfortable enough to where I couldn't sleep through them so I started timing them and they were 5 min apart lasting 45-60 seconds and within an hour they were 3 minutes apart. So I got my husband up and told him we should probably go soon so he showered and I got the labor bag finished and got ready to go.
We left the house around 6am, dropped the dog off at my BFF's, got DH some McDonalds, stopped by the ATM, and got to the hospital around 7 and I was at a 3cm. They checked me into OB triage and said they wanted to monitor me for an hour to see if they wanted to keep me. I despised that monitor. I wanted to move around and stand up cause it made the contractions so much better! Ugh. 15 minutes later they said they wanted to keep me because his heart rate was decelerating during contractions - which was irritating because it wouldn't happen when I was standing up but I had the dumb monitor on and had to lay on my back or side with that. SUPER UNCOMFORTABLE!
7:30ish I was moved over to the delivery room where I stood next to the bed and labored. I don't really remember much from there on out but I got to 7 pretty fast and man did those contractions hurt! I just kept telling myself that women all over the world do this every day and that I did NOT need meds that I could do it! I got to 10cm and after 10 minutes of pushing Jule Thomas was born 7 lbs 12 oz 21 in long at 12:55pm. My water didn't break until I was pushing and there was meconnium all up in it X( So when he came out they clamped the cord immediately (against my wishes to wait until it stopped pulsating) and didn't let me have skin to skin or immediate breast feeding. I was devastated. All that hard work and pain and I couldn't even see my little man. They were suctioning all the junk out of his nose and mouth while I was getting stitched up across the room. They said I was bleeding a lot and tore twice which is funny cause I was barely sore down there and still feel good down there. Maybe like I rode a bike for a little too long but that's it. He got an 8 and 9 on his apgars then they took him to the nursery for some more suctioning and they said his sugar was low so they fed him a few cc's of formula. I was IRATE. I told the nurse he was not to be given any formula or sugar water unless I was consulted. I think all the precautions they took because of the meconnium were probably to be on the safe side and I get why they did them but it still was irritating and I think that's why we had trouble latching on and feeding for the first few days and had to pump and cup feed him. I really hated the hospital. I got like 2 hours of sleep the two days we were there, there was no comfortable place for my husband to hang out/sleep, some nurse or tech was in the room every freakin hour to take blood pressure, or blood, or some other request - then my husband, aunt, myself and MIL all got a stomach bug from the hospital which we spent the first two days at home recovering from. ARG!
So labor went fast and natural like I wanted but after did not. I'm still very excited to have my little man out and healthy and home I am HIGHLY considering a birthing center for next time!
Re: Baby Jule Came on my Birthday :) A natural birth story
Congrats!! Sorry your hospital experience sucked... at least you didn't have to be induced, right?
DS born Dec 10, 2013
it took me a while to come to terms with my horrible hospital experience with DD, so I can appreciate how frustrated you were... especially with the no sleep - I had the same problem and it made it all so much more frustrating...
anyway, congrats on your natural birth and your new DS!! hope you're feeling better after the stomach bug and he's catching on to BFing!
