breastpumps.. medela vs. ameda

Hello ladies,

I am due in July and looking into which breastpump I should purchase. I am leaning more towards the Ameda because of the closed system but I am worried about how it doesnt mimick the sucking pattern like the Medela. I plan to breastfeed while Im with LO and pump when Im at work. If LO is still nursing some of the time will that be enough for the milk supply to continue? TIA!! Im super nervous about BF..

I have a Medela PIS I borrowed from a friend. I love it! You need to nurse/pump as often as possible to keeo your supplyy up. I had a small supply due to a boob that was a dud, although with my 1st 2 kids there was no issue. Every woman, pregnancy and baby is different. I would definitely sign up for a BF class if I was you. I regret not doing it and although I enjoyed nursing, I wish I would have read more and asked more about it. It's tough for a few weeks but so so so awesome! I weaned my DD almost 2 months ago and I am seriously considering relactating!

I have the Lansinoh Double Electric, which is the same pump as the Ameda Purely Yours. I've been back to work for 6 months, and I've never had to supplement, so the pump is doing it's job. I can't compare it to the Medela since I've only used one pump.

I did a ton of research too, and I really couldn't justify the additional cost of the Medela over the Ameda/Lansinoh that seemed to be equal. I also like the closed system of the Ameda/Lansinoh.

I just replaced my Medela PISA with the Ameda Purely Yours. The Ameda has two dials, one for speed and one for suction, so you can adjust it to mimic how LO nurses. I highly recommend getting a closed system vs. an open one. Medela pumps are way more expensive and have gotten crappy lately. They recalled some PISA pumps recently and the replacements have been even worse (from what I've read on this board). I'd go with Ameda or Hygeia over Medela.

Ameda hands down - Medela is overpriced and the open system is a huge deal breaker for me.

You can easily adjust the suction on the Ameda to mimic nursing patterns.

Agreed!! I got mine as a hand me down and its been great for 2 kids now. I can adjust the cycles and suction to what works best for me! It's small and fairly lightweight too. Plus Medela seems to ne having a lot of probs lately- theres an awful lot of posts on here about it.

I have used both Medela and Ameda and from my experience, Ameda is more comfortable and I was pumping a lot more with it. Its also much easier to clean and more affordable. I dont know if you qualify for WIC but if you do they will give you a brand new Ameda Purely Yours for free!! That is where I got mine from and I am now pregnant again and will be using this pump again. They are giving me a brand new pack of tubing and phlanges. The Medela that I had started having motor problems after a few months and it took them forever to send me replacement parts. I have used my Ameda through 2 children and it still works like new.

I have experience with both. I had a hand-me-down Medela PISA from my sister that just crapped out (motor died and it's not under warranty any longer), so I bought an Ameda Purely Yours Ultra at BRU.

So far, the pros to the Ameda are: closed system, fewer parts to wash.

I do have to say though, I think I miss the Medela. I feel that the letdown speed was faster on the PISA than the fastest setting on my Ameda... so I'm finding it difficult to match the speeds that I'm used to, and I'm not able to get as much output. Also, on the Medela I pretty much never moved off the lowest suction setting, and I've been cranking it way up on the Ameda. The Ameda is louder, and has an annoying beeping sound.

I'll probably keep the Ameda for a bit to see if I can get used to it since it is cheaper (there is a $50 rebate on Ameda's site, FYI), but I am seriously considering returning the Ameda and buying one of the cheaper Medela PISA models.
