XP: to cry it out or not...

My baby will be 2 months on Friday, and my husband and I are arguing over whether to let her CIO or not. She gets very fussy certain times of day, she is fed, changed, has been given gripe water, and is still crying. I cannot hold her all the time. It is making me nuts. He says I should just let her cry it out and eventually she will calm down, I say no. What should I do?

  • From what I have read, 2 months is too young to CIO. Have you tried carrying LO in a wrap or sling? I have a Moby and DS loves it!

  • I agree with the above poster on all accounts. I have a baby ktan wrap which is super easy and LO loves it too. He still will cry in it but he will actually calm down long enough for us to both breathe. I find that he cries inconsolably when he gets too tired. We try to get in 2 good naps a day and have a regular bedtime. Some nights are still a fight to sleep, but I hear it gets better, so hang in there. Also, have you looked into happiest baby on the block? It's not a cure all, but it works wonders.

  • And don't forget... You are a good mom. You may be tired and praying for quiet, but you have the right instincts. Trust them! :)

  • so when should we let them CIO?  I don't want her to get too used to being picked up all the time.

  • I think 4 months is the earliest to start doing CIO.  I agree with PP about trying a baby wrap.  I also have a Ktan and DD2 loves it.  She usually will fall asleep in it after a few minutes of fussing.

Is your LO colicky? Is she only fussy at night when she is overtired? With DD1, running the vaccuum always helped her to fall asleep. I did CIO with DD1 when she was about 9 months and it was the best thing ever.  We finally hit a wall with her bad sleeping habits and knew it was time to try it.   It was one of the best things we ever did.  It was very hard, but she is still a good sleeper because of it.

  • It looks as though I am in the minority here.  I let my LO start to CIO around 3 weeks old for bedtime that is, when we put him down in his crib we let him CIO for up to an hour (if it takes that long) or when his cry changes.  He only used the full hour the first two nights then it was 15 min then none.  Now he usually goes to bed without any crying and he knows when it is bedtime better than I do sometimes.  During awake periods I let him cry until he calms down and that is when I change where he is and what's in front of him but I don't usually do anything while he is still actively crying.

Every mom knows their baby the best though this is just what works for us and my LO has taken right to it, there have been times where I have done things differently because his cry was different or I just knew that he needed a little extra cuddle time.

  • I think 2 months is too early to CIO. People certainly do it that early but it's not the type of relationship I wanted to establish with my child. Trying a bjorn, sling or wrap may help free you up a bit.

  • I only let her CIO if C'ingIO takes at the max 10 minutes. If she really gives an angry cry, I get her before that. Sometimes she really fights sleep and it takes just those few minutes for her to go out.
  • I think 2 months is too young to cio. They don't have the ability to self soothe at that age. That being said, when my dd was 2 months (and younger) sometimes she just didn't want to be held. She would cry and cry in our arms and if I put her down (in a bouncer, play mat or sometimes just on a blanket on the floor) she would fuss for a minute and then stop. I think all of the holding was too much for her.

I don't think cio is bad if done correctly (we did ferber with dd when she was 6 months) but letting a little baby just cry for more than a few minutes is not okay. Letting your baby cio is an actual method that isn't just leaving them until they exhaust themselves into sleep.

Good luck, I hope everything gets better soon!

  • I can't rush to do things but if after a few minutes (5 at most) he's still not calm I try to put him the swing or we'll try 1-2oz to see if that helps.

The best however is a nice warm tub.  I was so upset and frustrated once night. Mj was screaming during his usual frustration hour.  I couldn't take all the crying so I said lets try a bath just to see if it would calm him down.. I couldn't believe when  not only did it work but he slept almost 7 hrs that night.

  • There is a huge difference between crying and fussy.

I will let DS fuss on his own if he is fed, dry, and I know he is not gassy. If it turns into crying then I will pick him up but otherwise he is fine. The fussiness doesn't always turn into crying and after fussing for a minute or two he is fine.

Thank you for saying this better than I could.
