We're selling our city place and anticipating (excitedly!!) to buy a home in Woodridge/Downer's Grove area. I currently work on the north side of Chicago. Any idea on how long it would take me to commute in to be at work by 8am? I can leave work at 3:30 most days so I'm hoping to skirt past the worst of 5:00 traffic. Sounds awful as I'm writing this but it means a shorter commute for hubby and I can always relocate my job after a year it its crazy. Thoughts? TIA
Re: commuting times from west burbs to city-north
Would you be driving or taking the train/buses? It really depends exactly where you are going and coming from. To give you an idea, we live right on the Naperville/Aurora border near 88 (less than 5 min. drive to the Rt. 59 train station) and DH works in Bucktown and it normally takes him about an hour to drive to/from work, but sometimes more. Taking public transportation would make it longer, so he doesn't even bother. When we first moved to the burbs DH worked downtown and the Metra was great, but it doesn't make sense anymore b/c he'd have to transfer to a bus or take a cab after getting off the train.
So I'm guessing your drive would be about 45 min. depending on how far East you need to go.
45 minutes to an hour is about accurate. 7 am is pretty much the most traffic on the expressways though.
I live about 15 min west of 290 in South Hanover Park and I work in the West loop. I work 6:30-3:30 though so it takes me about 45 minutes each way with barely any traffic.
45 minutes may be right, but be prepared that the traffic on 290 is very unpredictable and very heavy and at times it could take significantly longer. I live a bit farther than you because we're not right on 88, so we have to take Roosevelt to 290. So assuming I am maybe 10 minutes farther than you, I will say that it has pretty much never taken us less than an hour during rush hour, and we're only going to the loop. I think if you're going north that will add on some time. When we leave early (6:45-7) I'm usually in between 8 and 8:15. We also drop our son at daycare in the west loop which adds a bit of time but not much. If I leave at 8, I'm lucky to be in my office by 9:30.
Good luck!
