Has anyone started childbirth classes yet?

DH and I started a 5-week series last Sunday (last night was our 2nd class).  It's been interesting so far.  It's taught by a RN.  The first half of class, she goes over practical information (signs of labor, stages of labor, labor techniques, etc.) and then at the end we go over a variety of relaxation and breathing techniques.  She doesn't push one certain strategy (like Lamaze or Bradley or whatever), but teaches us parts of each one so that we can determine for ourselves what might work best.

I'll admit that getting into the nitty-gritty details of labor rattled me a little...I think I've mostly been forcing myself not to think about it too much, lol.  (Denial at it's finest)  But I'm glad we're doing the classes because it's definitely mentally preparing me better than I thought it would.

Anyone else started any classes yet, or planning to?

  • I wanted to get it out of the way and before I get huge, since I'm overweight already and not sure if I will be able to get up from the floor, if they still do the floor stuff.

We are starting March 31st, 5 classes. We got really lucky too, my BF works for a Healthy Start program where we live and she gave us a coupon for a free 5 week session.  I hope that they go into lots of detail, can't wait to see DH's face since he thinks that pregnancy is a vacation.

  • We are also taking a 5 week class, but ours doesn't start until May 24.  I hope that's not too late...

  • I'm not starting until the first week of June! Eeek. The hospital isn't offering any in May, and I felt like April was too early.

  • I'm taking classes with the RN (who is also a doula/monitrice/lactation consultant) who works with the midwife we're using for our home birth. She does classes every Monday evening, the total course is 5 weeks, but each class is self-contained, so you don't have to take them in order. Teaches everything from labor/delivery to newborn care and breastfeeding. I'm told the LD stuff is mainly Lamaze-based, so I hope I like it! I'm 25 weeks today, and we'll start our classes in the next week or two.

  • I should note that we only started so early because the other 5-week sessions our hospital offered didn't really fit our schedule well (or they were too late).  Didn't mean to make anyone feel behind...I have one of the latest due dates in the class!  :)

  • Mine start next Tuesday (March 29).  The doctor wanted me to take them early since we're having twins.

  • We're doing a 3 week series starting on the 7th, and then doing a breastfeeding one and a basic baby care one at the end of May. I was worried the birth class was going to be too early, and I would forget stuff, but it's the only one that fit in our schedules and I've decided that it's good to go through it now and decide our birth plan based on the info we will get.

  • Yup! We're going to our 3rd class tomorrow.  So far so good.  Loads to learn and tips that I wouldn't have known otherwise.  The RN that teaches it is totally amazing and really celebrates birth.  We watched a labor video last week - yup intense but amazing, I totally cried.  I would definitely recommend taking a class for first time mama's.

  • Because we have twins the doctor wanted us to take everything before our 30th week, which is April 22, and the dates for multiples-specific classes at the hospital are sporadic, so we took our Breastfeeding class on March 12th and our labor/delivery/hospital tour all day class this past Saturday.

I was SO OVERWHELMED after the BF class, which is why I'm so glad DH was there, and even though I'm with you on not thinking about the nitty gritty too much, I felt better, albeit still overwhelmed after the class.  It's a lot!  I'm re-reading the materials in a week or so, but when the day comes I think I'm going to have a "just go with it" philosophy.  Between having my cribs up and ready and taking the classes, this is all so real now (which feels so weird to say!)

  • We're doing ours in May when I'll be 28 weeks - with our opposite work schedules we had to do the Sat. class which isn't offered as frequently so it was either May or August (which I'm thinking won't be helpful lol).

  • We're taking the hospital's one day accelerated class on April 10th... we get a tour of Labor and Delivery as well and were instructed to bring pilllows :)
