Carseat question - front facing vs rear facing

I always just assumed I would make the baby's carseat front facing so I could see her in the backseat. However I just read an article saying it is much safer to have the carseat rear facing until the child is two. Are you having yours rear facing? Also, do all carseats have the ability to put it either way you want?

Re: Carseat question - front facing vs rear facing

  • Rear facing for the first year is mandatory, but it looks like that may get extended to two years.

  • It depends on what you mean by "carseat".

An infant carrier should ALWAYS be rear-facing.  No question.

Once the infant outgrows the carrier, the next carseat should be rear-facing now until 2 years.  We flipped DD at 12 months because then the recommendation was one year.

While your child is rear-facing, you can put a mirror on the headrest of the seat so you can still see your child.

  • Infant carseats can only be installed rear facing. You can get mirrors to hang on the back seat to be able to see them better. Rear facing is the only safe way for an infant to ride.

Convertible car seats can go forward or rear facing, but if you take a newborn & put them forward facing they wont survive a car accident. Thats why the guideline used to be turning them around at 1, now its at 2.

Watch the link Mrs.Leah posted in the other carseat thread, its eye opening.

  • Infant seats always face rear. Then Convertible seats can go either way, hence"convertible".

what PP said about changing regs.

Also: in terms of checking on LO when rear-facing: thats why they have those mirrors to see LO

  • Infant car seats MUST be rear facing.  As pp said, convertible seats must now be rear facing as well until 2 yrs of age.

You can always buy a mirror to attach to the backseat headrest, that way when you look in your rearview you can see the baby's face.  That's what we plan to do.

  • See, little (important) things like this that I don't know sometimes makes me question how I will be as a mom. I know I shouldn't and I learn as I go, but I definitely get so much information from you ladies, thanks :)

Are you taking any infant classes? I'm lost when it comes to a lot of this stuff, and we opted to take infant care classes rather than birthing classes.

I am going to take an infant class that tells me all the basics (which I really need!). However, it won't be until like May.

  • Ok, dumb question here, but where do I put the mirror if my back seat doesn't have headrests? Just attach it to the seat somehow?

My car had no back headrests, I had to look but I found one that has a hook that goes down behind the seat part.

  • Rear facing is the safest way to ride for baby....watch this video, you'll see why!

  • Just heard on news today that rear facing for first two years is now recommended.

Here's a link with the story. VERY good info.

It's mandatory law to keep them rear facing and all infant seats are only meant for use for rear facing.
