When Did You Stop Formula Or BM?

Collin is now a year old and I know that we can introduce whole milk....However I have purchased 2 containers of the toddler formula. With Cooper we went to milk right away only to find out at age 2 that he had a cows milk allergy and has been on almond milk shortly thereafter. I am afraid to introduce milk to Collin because he cannot tell me if it is upsetting his tummy.

WWYD?

Re: When Did You Stop Formula Or BM?

  • I planned to phase formula out when A was 1, but we ran out of formula last week and I really didn't want to buy more for just a couple weeks, so she's on WCM now.

    She's been doing just fine.

  • We stopped formula about 2 weeks before DD turned 1. We picked a weekend to try milk (so we could be home) and went with it.

How did you find out with Cooper that he had a milk allergy? Were there symptoms?

Funny story...we were renting a duplex where we found some mold when we were moving out. So we took Cooper in to have some bloodwork done for toxic mold and while they were poking him the one time the Dr decided to do a complete food allergy panel. So the boy came back with a cows milk, peanut and egg white allergy. Cooper being my first I never really though much about allergies. His stools were never solid but I didnt know that was NOT normal for a 2 year old. We switched to soy..and that didnt help so on the advice from a friend we went to almond milk and he has been great ever since. He can have cheese, yogurt, ice cream etc..just cannot drink milk strraight or the soft stools/diarhea come back. BTW the child lives on peanut butter also....guess its a slight peanut allergy according to the Dr.

I did the same thing with S, and chances are T will start around 11 months as well. S was eating lots of finger foods at that time.

  • We started to phase in milk at 11 months with a milk/formula combo and increased the ratio each week.

Do you have any idea what the odds are that a 2nd child would have similar allergy issues?  If he can have everything except milk that sounds more like a lactose intolerance than a true milk allergy so that would concern me less.  I'd probably use the toddler formula and as you get to the end phase in milk and talk to his pedi.  When we first started milk 100% we had some weird poop the first couple weeks.  We went from fairly mushy poops to hard, totally white nuggets.  So I'd give it a couple weeks until you decide how it really effects his poop.

  • I've been trying to introduce it for about 2 months.  Started with it in a cup (because that would have been ideal) but he wouldn't have it.  Then we started mixing with breastmilk in his bottles (1:4 and then 1:1) but we noticed that his stool was loosening so we've stopped WCM and are currently researching what to do next.
  • We were told by our pedi to start replacing 1 oz of formula per meal with whole milk at around 1 year old, then a few days later 2 oz and so on until she was on whole milk. We also switched to the sippy at that time.

  • I am anti- WCM in general so I kept on with the toddler formula at least partially for a while. Then I switched to goat's milk. She does get yogurt , cheese and ice cream if she wants but she doesn't even like much of that so mostly it's goat's milk. I was still giving her a little of the toddler formula (Good STart version) until recently actually. I phased it out very slowly because I worry about her vitamin intake.

  • We switched to milk right before his 1st birthday. I was about to run out of formula and didn't want to buy more, so we just switched.  We actually went cold turkey with the milk - DS didn't seem to notice that it was milk and not formula.  The only change I noticed with him was that he was constipated for a couple of days, but he seems to be fine now.

  • We just switched over to WCM. The transition seems to be going fine, but I am mixing in about an ounce of formula in each serving just to use up what I have left. I'll be keeping an eye on her mood/skin/BM's for a while just to make sure she isn't reacting. But so far so good.

As far as the allergy thing, I wouldn't worry too much about it. One kid having an allergy to something, doesn't mean the next kid will. For example, my brother and I have completely different food allergies. The only allergy we do have in common is bee's. If I were you, I would start mixing in a little milk at a time and watch for any changes or signs of reaction. GL!

  • We did this past week and mixed with formula. I noticed a diaper rash and softer stool. So we have gone back to full formula until diaper rash is gone..then may introduce again just to see if it was a coidinence or if it really is upsetting him. Again loves cheese and yogurt, and never had a problem with that.
  • We did it shortly after 1 when we were just out of formula.
