Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How much and how often does your LO eat?

DS schedule is below

9am - 2 TBS cereal and 7oz Milk

1pm - 7 oz

4pm - 7 oz

7:30 pm - 3 TBS cereal and 7 oz

8:30 -  finishes what he didn't drink of the 7 oz before and possibly another 2 oz depending on if he is still hungry.

He seems to be content with this but they say "2.5 oz for every lb" and DS is over 15 lbs. which means around 37oz a day. He's only getting about 28. At his 4 month check up on the 1st he was in the 75th percentile on his length and head cir. but below 50th on his weight so he is long and skinny. Dr didn't seem to be concerned then but I am starting to wonder .................. Thanks ladies! :)

Re: How much and how often does your LO eat?

  • At 4 months my LO was eating 7 sometimes 8 times a day but I EP.  7 oz seems like a lot at one time at that age but maybe not.

  • My ds takes 5-6oz every 3-4 hours and also gets solids 2-3x a day. As long as he is consistently gaining weight and your pedi isn't concerned, I wouldn't worry about it.

I forgot to post on here that I EP also :)
  • Has your LO always been around the 50th percentile for weight?  My LO is 50th perecntile for weight and 95th percentile for length.  My pedi said as long as she stays around the 50th percentile in the weight category that is good.  If she suddenly jumps up to the 80th percentile then he would be concerned for over feeding or if she dropped then he would worry about underfeeding.  I BF for about 80% of her feedings and suppliment with 4-6 oz of formula a day.  When I bottle feed she gets between 4 and 5 oz.
  • Ummm, we have no schedule!  He probably eats at leat 12-15 times a day, but I've never counted.  He's so busy and interested, he doesn't stay focused on the boob that long.  He usually makes it through 1 letdown, so based off pumping sessions, he's probably getting 1-3 oz each feeding, based on the time of the day.

ETA - he also gets solids 1-2 times a day, but he doesn't really get all that much down yet.

At 7 months it says average BM intake is around 30oz if they are also eating solid foods.  I have never heard of the "2.5 oz for every lb" before....at what point would that stop?  37oz would be quite a bit of milk in my opinion.  My daughter is currently taking in around 24oz a day but that is a rough guess as she is mostly on the breast.  If she is taking a bottle it is usually only 4 oz but she eats 6 times a day.

  • C isn't on a schedule, but his feedings are generally every 3 hours. He has a 6 or 7 oz. bottle at every feeding (I EP) and usually has 5 bottles a day. That's about 30-35 oz. (insert shocked face here) ... I guess I never did the math. I just started making his bottles 6 or 7 oz. because they were normally 5 but 10 days ago or so he would be a fussball after eating and would want to eat a little more.

  • Two boobs every two hours, 24 hours per day.  We haven't tried anything else yet, maybe in another month or two.

    Two boobs = roughly 4oz

This exactly except no solids yet.

My LO eats 32-36 oz/day. Lately he's been waking twice at night to feed so we've been on the high end.
