- I have been exclusively pumping for 4 weeks now (baby could not breastfeed) and I am EXHAUSTED of it. I plan on doing it for another few weeks to build up my frozen supply, but I am slowly weening off. Down to every 4 hours now... woo hoo. So we will be switching to formula when the frozen runs out (when she's around 3 months old) and I was curious if you just stop the breast milk and start using formula, or if you alternate bottles of breast milk and formula to start so her system to get used to it? Or would that be the opposite and cause tummy aches?
I have "googled" it and can't really find an answer. Anyone know or have suggestions? I will ask the pediatrician when I see him next month.
Re: Switching from breast milk to formula?
I alternated since my supply was tanking and it didn't cause DS any problems. If anything, it was better for him because the formula we had him off would have caused him to be constipated and I didn't realize he was slowing down until he go more formula then BM so we switched.
Either way, though, I don't think it matters Just give your Lo enough time to adjust the formula.
I did this 2 weeks ago. After asking my pediatrician, we introduced formula to bottle of breastmilk. So you slowly introduce it to the LO. 75% breast milk with 25% formula for a few days and then up to 50/50 and so on. I had such a supply left that I am still mixing but Liam now gets 3 ounces of formula with 2 ounces of breast milk in each bottle.
Just talk to your doctor to see what he/she suggests. I haven't had any problems doing it this way.
