Is this a nursing strike?

DS has barely nursed since this morning. We went to my ILs today so he was pretty distracted and didn't want to eat. Plus my SIL and MIL were eager to feed him solids and he ended up eating a lot more solids then he usually does. They didn't force him or anything, I think he just wanted to show off. Since we were at ILs all afternoon, his schedule has been off and he missed his afternoon nap (never good). But anyways, we came home and went through the bedtime routine, but DS wouldn't nurse! I usually nurse him to sleep so this was especially weird. DH had to rock him to sleep instead. My breasts feel so full right now so I know he hasn't eaten much today. He just woke up after being asleep for about an hour. I tried to feed him, but no luck. He wouldn't even latch on.

So how do I navigate through this? If he wakes up again but won't eat, should I try to feed him a bottle? Should I attempt a dream feed? He's cutting a tooth right now and we gave him Tylenol. This is his 6th tooth and this has never happened with his other teeth. I'm so confused right now and feel so rejected! I'm planning on pumping before bed or I'd never be able to sleep because of the fullness. Any other advice? DS is a big time nurser, so I'm really hoping he's not weaning!

Re: Is this a nursing strike?

  • Babies general don't self wean before 1 year. DD has gone through a few nursing strikes due to teething. She also has had days like you described where we were out and about and she was just too distracted to nurse. It's important to pump as soon as you can when he skips a feeding. If the strike lasts a few days, your supply could go down a bit if you don't pump to replace those feedings. Plus, LO needs that milk, one way or another. I handle nursing strikes by offering to nurse first if that doesn't work, then a bottle of pumped milk. If he refuses a bottle, you can try a sippy cup, a regular cup, a spoon, or mix it into his solids. Breastmilk is still their main source of nutrition until they turn 1, so you want to make sure he still gets enough. Most strikes only last a few days. Just hang in there and try not to get too stressed by it. This too shall pass.
