Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did you start giving your LO juice and water?

Our pedi said at his 6 month appt. to only give formula or BM for now.  I am wondering if 9 months is okay for 2 oz. of juice and 2 oz of water.  He goes on Tuesday but I bought some Mott's Tots and thought I would give a little bit to him tonight.  What do you think?

Re: When did you start giving your LO juice and water?

  • I've given LO some juice for about a month now, daily.  We do one ounce of juice to 4oz of water, so it's really like flavored water in his cup, but he loves it :)

  • we started giving water in a sippy when we started solids at 6 months (about 2 oz's or so).  we haven't done juice yet because i don't think he really needs the extra sugar.  they give it to him occassionally at daycare but not regularly.  maybe when we ween him off formula we will start.

  • I started putting water in a sippy cup when LO was about 6 months old and offered it at every meal.  it took him awhile to get the hang of it, but now he drinks a couple oz per meal.

I haven't done juice at all yet and won't.  I don't see a need, even for constipation b/c purreed prunes do the trick.

  • We started giving DD water at 6 months to practice with the sippy. She's only really getting the hang of it now, so I don't think she was actually consuming very much at all. We don't give juice and probably won't for some time.

  • We started offering Lo a sippy cup with water in it last week. She spent more time baptizing herself with it than drinking from it, so today I bought her some Gerber apple juice. I was thinking that if it had taste to it, maybe she would try to drink it instead of bath in it. She actually did much better with it. She only drank maybe 1/2 oz, but she was actually trying to drink from it instead of playing with it.

  • We started offering water with solids around 6 months. Wee never give juice and don't plan on ever giving it regularly.

  • Water at 6 months.  DS got a little juice when he was really sick once.  DS2 didn't get juice till about 18 months.  I don't see any reason to give juice at this point.  It is just sugar with no nutritional value.

Our pedi said we could begin to offer water in a sippy at our 6 month appt.  We started shortly after, although he never really drank any until he hit 9 months or so.  We have only given prune juice for constipation and I usually just give it to him out of a regular cup, so I can make sure he's getting it (we give pureed prunes everyday too, but they don't always do the trick).

  • I started giving her water in a sippy at about 6 or 7 mo, I think. Mostly to practice drinking out of it. Now that she's gotten the hang of it, it's usually BM in her sippy (the rest she gets straight from the tap :)

I haven't ever given her juice. If she's constipated (which she's only been once) I give her pureed prunes, so I don't see a need for it.

I don't see why you can't if you want to. As long as it's not his main source of fluids, it's certainly not going to do any harm.

  • Our pedi said we could start at 7 months. We don't give juice eveyday but usually after lunch as a treat I give DS some no sugar added great value apple juice. I was told by my pedi not to water it down because then he will always expect "sweet" water. I only added water once to some v8 splash because it seemed thick. I'm not sure about people saying they don't want LO to have the extra sugar, I always buy 100% no sugar added juice, it has natural sugars but so do the pureed baby fruits. To each their own. I say go for it!

The part of fruit that is good for you is the fiber, the flesh of the fruit. In juice form, all of the good parts are removed and you are left with just the sugars. Even though they are natural sugars, they are still sugars. When I had GD I couldn't eat fruit let alone drink juice. Pureed fruit still has the fibers of the fruit, so it's different.

  • At 9 months it's fine to give water. DS probably gets a couple ounces throughout the day, mostly with solid meals.

There is no reason for juice at all, but it's technically safe at 9 months, yes....

Hmm, what about the Simply Apple Juice, if I remember correctly it has more sustance to it. I wonder if that would be a better juice for DS.

  • I just started giving lo water last week.  He takes an ounce or two at lunch & dinner and loves it.
  • We've been doing 2 oz juice and 2 oz of water with dinner since about 8 months. We started doing water by itself at 6 months.

  • We also do the sippy cup of water, which he loves. We do juice occasionally, but he won't drink much. A little from time to time isn't bad imo. But if you want something besides milk, go for water more often!

  • Juice isn't really supposed to be good for adults so we haven't even given her juice yet. But we live in the desert so she's definitely had some water (like in a sippy cup while on errands or on dog walks).

Also, one orange does not squeeze out 8oz of juice so a cup of OJ is like way more than one serving of fruit which still, as you said, doesn't include the fiber

  • 7 or 8 months? She drinks a ton of water, now. I give it to her after every meal and she chugs.
