Cloth Diapering

GDiaper question

Sorry ahead of time, I'm sure you get posts like these a lot. So if this one is redundant, I apologize.

Our first child is due the end of May, and before even TTC I had done research of disposable/cloth. I really wanted to do cloth and researched brands/cost/etc and my Dh was on board. But then we had to think about our youngest dog ...and his nasty habit of poop eating. (It's his favorite treat) We've tried everything to stop the unwanted behavior (I work as a vet tech, with some education in animal behavior/training) nothing has worked. So, outside of watching him to stop it before he eats the poop, nothings working.

I'm getting off topic, basically, if we did cloth we'd have to wash the dirtys every day in fear of our dog eating one and having to have a foreign body sx (about $1500-$2000) so with water bill increasing even more and the risk of that sx cost, we decided to do disposables that could go out side at the end of the day where, and locked in the trash containers.

Well, I recently told about gdiapers, and how they have the disposable refills that you can flush/compost/whatever. And I'm thinking that may be the perfect solution for us, and our pup. I'm just curious if anyone here has used them, hor they've worked out, typical amount of leakage, etc. Or any links to some blogs with info would be greatly appreciated. I'm still early in my research on them, and figured that you ladies would be the best to point me in the right direction to educate myself, husband, and family.

Thanks (sorry this got long!)

My overly happy baby girl!

Re: GDiaper question

  • They don't get great reviews from cloth diaperers at the top of the board is an FAQ link which has a review page, check that out for sure.

We received some as gifts and I didn't use them more than twice while I waited for LO to fit into his OS diapers.  They have a weird plastic hammock inside of a cloth cover which doesn't contain very well so the cloth cover was wet every time we changed him.

Could you get a locking garbage can like this one to use as a diaper pail?  It looks like many of the reviewers got it for the same reason.

  • I received a bunch for my baby shower so I use them when we leave the house for any long periods of time. That way I don't have to worry about rinsing and toting around poopy diapers in the car all day. However, like PP said, they have the plastic liner to hold the pad in but it does not contain the poop in the diaper. I would NEVER use them over night or as my primary diaper. They do make cloth inserts for them but I'm sure there would still be an issue with the plastic liner leakage. I would do what PP recommended and get a locking diaper pail. Have you looked into the BG Flip system? I've never tried it but I know a lot of woman here use them and like them.

  • We use gdiapers with gcloth inserts (among other diapers).  I like them.  We rarely get leaks with Natalie and never poop leaks.   On Dominic, they weren't the best fit and he often leaked....now, they fit him much better.    I like using them.  They are trim and cute.

  • I'm definitely going to look into getting a locking bin for them, if we get one of those that'll open up a lot more options. Thank you!

As for the BG Flip... I honestly haven't heard of it before. Is that this website? It looks like the same people, so I'm going to assume it is. Definitely another option to look into.

Thank you so much for the help so far!

Yup, that's the one. I use BG 4.0 and I love them. I think I am going to get some Flips to see if I like them better.?

  • Couldn't you just put the dirties in a room with the door closed?

  • gDiapers don't typically get good reviews from people who have tried a non-hybrid cloth option (hybrids are diapers that are both cloth and disposable). They're also bad for the water treatment system. Look up info on that. Specifically, there's info from Vancouver, WA. Personally, I wouldn't use them because I think their negative potential is high. Also, I just don't see how they could possibly contain breast fed baby poop.

But I totally get wanting to keep your dog from eating LO's poop. Nobody wants that! Have you thought of alternatives for a diaper pail? Some people use hanging wet bags instead. Is there somewhere you could hang a wet bag out of pup's reach? A lot of mamas use step lid trash cans as diaper pails. I believe Simple Human makes one that has a baby proof lock on it. I bet that would also would for a dog.

The problem is he's a tall dog, who has taught himself to open the step trash can we have in our kitchen. So we'd have to get a locking one, which I didn't know they made. But I'm definitely going to invest in one. He's also built like a deer, and is very tall so he can reach most places.

To the pp who asked about keeping the door shut... that would be the obvious answer, except I have a Dh who forgets to close doors all the way, like our bathroom, and the pup gets into the trash in there. So after years of trying to train Dh to close the doors 100% of the way, 100% of the time.. I gave up. It's just not always going to happen, and I'm not willing to take that risk with my dog.

I've been reading the reviews of gdiapers and did read a little about the flushing aspect of it. This is why I came to you ladies first, to point us in the right direction. And getting the locking trash can, will give us even more options. Dh was great with the flushing/disposable aspect of the gdiapers, so if I can get him on board with a locking trash can and washing the cloths, I'd rather do that to be honest. If we get a bin that can keep the dog out, then it really opens up our options.

  • I totally understand. If I was in your shoes there would be no hope for constant door closing. Another thing to consider with the gDiapers is that you are supposed to let the insert sit in the toilet for several minutes and twirl it with a stick before flushing. That could potentially cause problems with your pup too.

Here's the trash can I was thinking of. It's made by Simple Human. I don't see any specific information on how exactly it locks but it does say that it stays locked even if knocked over. I bet that would do the trick. Even if you don't end up using it for CDs it might be helpful for kitchen trash.

I think it's easier to get something new like a trash can / diaper pail and lock it from the start than it is to try to learn something new like closing doors completely when you've been doing something different. kwim?

Yes, definitely easier than retraining Dh, haha. I have a few pulled up on amazon to decide between, then it comes down to all the options of CD'ing and which one we'll choose.

  • We too have large dogs that think trash is a tasty treat, the only thing that works for our kitchen trash is keeping the trash behind a closed door in our pantry. We will be trying the locked trash can method for diapers once our little girl arrives but if that shows any indication of not working my back up plan is to keep the dirties in a wet bag or smaller can in our bathroom sink vanity using one of those child locks on the vanity door (similar to what some people do with kitchen trash under the sink). Good luck, I hope you find something that will work for you!

  • You can also look up other hybrid options, also called "all in twos."  They're are reviews of them on the FAQ board.  Some other brands that are similar are Best Bottoms, Grovia, Flip.  You can use the disposable inserts or cloth inserts in all of these dipes.  The disposable inserts are very expensive, though.  Reusing cloth inserts would be best in that respect, but you're still going to have a little laundry to do either way.

We've got the gDiaper infant pack with the tiny g's and small gpants.  We also ordered some of the hemp inserts to go with.  Then we're trying lots of other brands of diapers once the baby is big enough.  On a side note... the tiny g newborn dipes are SO CUTE!  :)
