clogged tear duct led to eye goop in NB

My little guy had clear tears dripping out of only one eye, then yesterday I noticed it turning into a thick green discharge. I went to urgent care since it was Saturday and they said he had a clogged tear duct. THey gave me eye drops to put in his eye four times daily, and told me to do tear duct massage. When I was handed the prescription there was also a prescription for oral antibiotics, which the doctor never mentioned when we were seen. Has anyone else had a newborn get a blocked duct so bad they needed drops or oral antibiotics? And how do you do tear duct massage? I looked it up online but not sure if I'm doing it right, or even in the right place.  Confused

Re: clogged tear duct led to eye goop in NB

  • clogged tear ducts are really common in newborns. when it happened to my DD, I just used a warm compress a few times a day and it cleared up. her Dr never mentioned massage or antibiotics, but maybe it wasn't as severe as for your DS. maybe try a warm compress for a few minutes before the drops for a day or so and see if that helps it clear faster?

  • Jake gets it, too.  It's very common, so don't panick.  We never went to the doctor over it, because it is so common.  Just make sure you wash your hands and massage the inner corner of his eye/nose area and use warm compressions.

  • DS had it for 11 months, and it magically cleared up in time for his 12 mon. appt when we would have had to talk about treatments!

To massage it, we used a soft , warm washcloth, did a few little circles right at the corner of the eye and then pulled it down and out just above the bone part of the eye socket. Does that make sense?

  • My little one has the same problem--not green gunk, but the occasional yellow eye boogies.  My pediatrician said to massage corner of his eye closest to his nose.  I do it a couple times a day.  She said it could just be "hard", we go on Tuesday, so I will ask again then.

  • Thanks for your suggestions. It's good to know it's common. I do wonder thugh if the reason we got drops is because it was very, very green and he didn't seem to want to open that eye with the crust that kept developing, so maybe just a worse case? I'll definitely be massaging it each time he nurses and try the warm cloth.
  • If you are breastfeeding, some milk on the goopy eye can help too. Built in antibiotics instead of prescription once  :)

  • My LO has it too. We had eye drops that we were using and it just got clogged again. Now I'm putting breast milk in her eye and massaging. I think I might try the warm washcloth trick!

So I tried the breast milk in his eye, because the drops didn't seem to be working at all, it cleared up within about 12 hours! I am now convinced this stuff is magic.Big Smile

  • Awesome! My little guy figured that out by himself. He essentially stabbed himself in the eye after he finished eating one day, and it seemed to clear up quite a bit. The next day, I read it in the Baby Book  :)
