Burning sensation?

Hi ladies- so I've been EBF DS since he was born and have had a few problems so far. I got a clogged duct in the right which turned into mastitis, which I was treated for and had taken a weeks worth of antibiotics. Well, it turned out to be more like 8-9 days of antibiotics ending today because I got another clogged duct in the left side and my Ob wanted me to stay on until I felt that side was clear, which it now is. Problem is now, that my right side now feels like I am having a burning sensation after I nurse, maybe 20+ mins after I nurse, sometimes it stops quickly and sometimes it lasts for a long time. The Ob basically just told me to keep putting warm compresses on the right side after I nurse, but this doesn't seem to be helping. I see him again next week for my six week checkup, but wanted to know if you ladies had any advice or ideas to help make this less uncomfortable until then? Tia!

Re: Burning sensation?

  • Where are you feeling the burning sensation? In your breast or your nipple? Being on antibiotics can lead to thrush (yeast overgrowth). With thrush, it can cause your nipples to itch/burn, become shiny, and you may feel shooting pains in your breasts. If that's what your experiencing, you'll want to let your OB know. Here's more info: https://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/thrush/thrush-resources.html#basics

Sometimes I experience a burning sensation when I have a clogged duct. I had mastitis too, but it was a while ago, and I don't remember if I experienced what you're describing. I do know it took a while for my supply to come back to normal on that side and it took a good week for the clog to completely clear up. You might try a cool compress for 10-15 minutes as needed to see if that feels better than heat. But you'll want to only do that after nursing, not right before.

Keep your OB updated on what you're experiencing if it persists. Also, if you can contact a lactation consultant, they may have more tips.
